This document is the foreword to the 4th edition of the Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) Reference Manual. It was developed by an MSA work group sanctioned by several major automotive companies.
The manual provides an introduction to measurement system analysis and guidelines for assessing different types of measurement systems. It is intended to help users understand measurement variability and its effects. The guidelines are meant to cover common measurement situations but may not address all possible questions that could arise.
The manual contains information on measurement planning, source selection, issues that can affect measurement, uncertainty analysis, and problem solving. It provides recommended practices for analyzing replicable variable and attribute measurement systems as well as approaches for non-replicable systems.
