Motivation
“Motivation is the process that accounts for an individual’s intensity, direction
and persistence of effort toward attaining a goal specifically an organizational
goal.”
Or
“Motivation is the result of process, internal or external to the individual, that
arouse enthusiasm and purse a certain course of action.”
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
According to me, Maslow’s hierarchy
of needs is one of the most practical
theory. It is one of those theories
which is most applicable in real life.
It has three levels which is further
divided into five stages which shows
the hierarchy of needs of a human
being.
Application
Stages Personal Application Professional Application
Physiological Needs As a student my first level of need
would be to have a nice campus
with good infrastructure and good
mess food.
A person beginning with his career
will be very concerned with
physiological needs such as
adequate wages and stable income.
Safety Needs A safe and a secured campus along
with a safe surroundings.
Security needs such as benefits, job
security and safe work
environment.
Belongingness and Love Needs Good friends, good faculty
members, good repo with the
management.
The level of social interaction an
employee will desire to work in an
environment where they are
accepted in the organization and
have some interaction with others.
This means effective interpersonal
relations are necessary.
Stages Personal Application Professional Application
Esteem Needs Recognition among the
students, faculty members and
the management.
Esteem needs are tied to an
employee’s image of himself
and his desire for the respect
and recognition of others.
Symbols of accomplishment
such as a meaningful job title,
job perks, awards, work space,
etc.
Self Actualisation Skill development in the area of
interest, participation in
college activities, showcasing
individual talents and skills on
various challenging platforms.
The employee will be
interested in growth and
individual development. He will
also need to be skilled at what
he does. He may want a
challenging job, an opportunity
to complete further education,
increased freedom from
supervision, or autonomy to
define his own processes for
meeting organizational
objectives.
Conclusion
As we know human beings don’t get satisfied with basic
needs so we crave for more and more to satisfy needs of
oneself. Hence the Maslows’s Hierarchy of Needs exactly
depicts the exact way how human behaviour satisfy their
needs step by step.
