Approaches to motivation.
MANAGING WORK MOTIVATION:
Motivation concept:
“Motivation means a process of stimulating people to
action to accompilsh desired goods-William G.Scott.”
• Motivation is a personal and internal feeling.
• Motivation is need based.
• Motivation is a continuous process.
• Motivation may be positive or negative.
• Motivation is a planned process.
Process of motivation:
Felt need

Approaches to motivation:
 The stick or Authoritarian approaches
 The carrot or Paternalistic approaches
 The carrot and stick approaches or Exchange
approaches.
The stick or authoritarian approaches:
“Do What I tell you, otherwise I Will Sack you”
 This approaches is still followed in prison and military
administration in all countries.
 This approaches represent a negative attitude.
 Without positive motivation no good result can be
obtained.
 The threat of punishment may dampen the sprit of the
employees.
The carrot or Paternalistic approaches
“You do What I Tell you because I shall Look
after your needs”
 There is only carrot and no stick.
 The employers think that because of these
rewards the employees will remain loyal and
grateful and work hard.
The carrot and stick approaches or Exchange
approaches:
 This combined approaches suggested that with
stick in one hand, the manager will extract the
work against the threat of penality and with the
carrot is another.
He will induce the worker to work harder in the
hope of good rewards.
