Thirty minute talk given at the fourth Portugese Open Access Meeting in Braga in late 2009. This talk draws from previous similar talks focussing on advocacy for open data and how to make it work for researchers on the ground.
In a world where knowledge is more a verb than a noun how do we foster deep learning in our students? Good questions cause thinking. Unfortunately, many of the questions regularly asked in classrooms focus on knowledge as a noun. This presentation will explore the effective use of thinking and learning tools in the classroom. We will work together to model teaching practices that lead to students co-constructing a networked (real world) rather than hierarchical (artificial) understanding of their world regardless of grade level or discipline.
Participants leave this workshop with a toolkit of research based questioning and thinking strategies they can begin using with their students tomorrow.

Google for "research life cycle" and you'll find a million images. Everyone has their own cycle, not all of them compatible. In this talk I argue that we need to move from a cycle conception of research information flows towards one based on networks. The library has the skills and values to act as a professional guide to this terriroty.

- Online Learning communities
- A particular learning community that we built
- How that learning community was used
A lot of the principles, problems and lessons apply to any learning community, whether you create it in your VLE, on facebook, on Ning or just on a blog or a wiki. Whatever technology you use, there are principles here that you should be able to apply.
Probably, most importantly, this is about building a learning community that works. Because, in many cases, they don't.
This proposed presentation was prepared for delivery at the New Media Consortium Future of Education summit held near Austin, TX January 22-24, 2013. It's based on work I've done with my colleagues Maurice Coleman, Buffy Hamilton, and Jill Hurst-Wahl, and is part of our continuing efforts to support the development of social learning centers onsite and online for libraries and other learning organizations.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
