White Space Creativity

In visual arts and graphic design, white space is fundamental to allowing a creation to exist, by creating delineation and focus. Similarly, in our lives, creativity often sprouts from the "white space" of time: the moments in our increasingly busy schedules between activities and thoughts that allow the subconscious to better absorb and connect information. Clearly, in order to be more creative, we need to open up this "in-between" space in our lives, but once we've done so, how can we best capitalize upon the brain's natural creative capacities? In this talk, we'll explore several counter-intuitive and potentially subversive methods for leveraging this "white space" to foment innovative thinking creative productivity.

You remember more than facts, you recall relationships & deeper connections between characters. Some of the powerful ways we leverage digital for deeper learning includes challenging sources of information (fake news), exploring bias (developing empathy through multiple perspectives), and creating powerful feedback loops that foster deeper learning. Powerful narratives, in a word or two, bring to mind a wealth of ideas & relationships; more than just facts. How can we find stories that make our teaching sticky and help kids find, and more importantly tell, stories that make learning stick? This workshop will equip teachers with the skills & knowledge to foster deeper learning across the curriculum by intentionally leveraging digital tools to foster deeper learning.

Denise R. Jacobs gave a presentation titled "The Creativity (R)Evolution" at UX Week in San Francisco on September 12, 2014. The presentation focused on nurturing creativity in oneself and others through tiny habits, empowered play, and creative collaboration. Attendees were given homework assignments to develop habits and collaboration skills. The overarching message was that creativity can be cultivated and sustained through individual and social practices, and this can lead to positive change in both individuals and communities.

Every year, usually in August, the Chinese in Singapore observe a large-scale tradition of paying respects to the dead. During this month, the "Gates of Hell” are opened and souls of the dead are freed and allowed to roam the earth where they seek food and entertainment. The 7th month of the Chinese lunar calendar is regarded as the Ghost Month. The 15th day of Ghost Month is Ghost Day, and the Ghost Festival is held the night before - on the evening of the 14th day. The activities throughout the month include preparing ritualistic food offerings, such as Mandarin oranges, roasted suckling pig, bowls of rice, and local Chinese cake made especially for the occasion. They also burn incense and joss paper to pay respect to the deceased. The festival is so widely-practiced in Singapore that special bins are set up in neighborhoods for believers to burn their joss paper. Small altars can also be seen outside many homes, both on private property and in public housing areas. On Ghost Day in Singapore and Malaysia, singers and dancers hold concert-like performances known as Getai on temporary stages set up in a residential districts. Everyone is welcome to watch the show as long as you don’t sit at the front row, which is reserved for the spirits. If you want to experience Ghost Festival without insulting the spirits, this presentation compiles a collection of taboos - 25 things NOT to do during Hungry Ghost Festival.

Rather, education helps you develop the lifelong learning skills that will help you to be responsive to change as it happens. It might be argued that, public confidence in higher education has been declining steadily as the gap between the 'relevance' seen (by students, communities, and commerce) between what students are being prepared for and the lives they are going to live. I wanted to ask the question (perhaps a little controversial) Are tertiary institutions innovative (something several claim to be) or are they simply doing the same things they have been doing for years, just using different tools? Are we preparing students to be ethical, able participants in communities - online and face-to-face?
