Long Division
Important Terms:
Dividend- The number that is being divided___6 3 ) 18 The dividend is 18.
Divisor - The number that divides the dividend___63 ) 18 The divisor is 3.
Quotient- The answer in a division problem___6 3 ) 18 The quotient is 6.
How To Do Long Division…
To remember the steps of long division, ask yourself this question…Do Monkeys Stop Being Rowdy?D = DivideM = MultiplyS = SubtractB = Bring downR = Repeat or Remainder
Let’s try this problem… ______ 5 ) 5 6 5
Step 1 - DivideWe decide how many times 5will go into 5 (what number times 5= 5?) __1___5 ) 5 6 5It will go 1 time>>>>>>>**Write your answer OVER the line OVER the 1st digit
Step 2 - MultiplyWe multiply 5x 1..__1___5 ) 5 6 555 x 1 = >>>>>>>**Write your answer UNDER the 1st digit
Step 3 - SubtractWe subtract 5 from 5.. __1___ 5 ) 5 6 5 - 5 0
Step 4 – Bring DownWe BRING DOWN the next digit.. __1________ 5 ) 5 6 5 - 50 6
Step 5 – Repeat or Remainder? The next step is to Repeat. We go back to step one and start over.**When there are no more numbers in the dividend to bring down, then the left over number becomes our Remainder
Step 1 - DivideWe decide how many times 5will go into 6 _ 1 1__5 ) 5 6 5 - 5__ 0 6 It will go 1 time>>>>>>>**Write your answer OVER the line OVER the 2nd digit
Step 2 - MultiplyWe multiply 5x 1.. _1 1__5 ) 5 6 5 - 5__ 0 60 55 x 1 = >>>>>>>**Write your answer UNDER the 1st and 2nd digits
Step 3 - SubtractWe subtract 5 from 6.. _1 1__ 5 ) 5 6 5 - 5__ 06- 0 5 1
Step 4 – Bring DownWe BRING DOWN the next digit.. _1 1__ 5 ) 5 6 5 - 5__ 0 6 - 0 5__1 5
Step 5 – Repeat or Remainder? The next step is to Repeat. We go back to step one and start over.**Remember… When there are no more numbers in the dividend to bring down, then the left over number becomes our Remainder
Step 1 - DivideWe decide how many times 5will go into 15 (what number times 5 = 15?)_ 1 1 3_5 ) 5 6 5 - 5__ 0 6 - 0 5__15It will go 3 times>>>>>>>**Write your answer OVER the line OVER the 3rd digit
Step 2 - MultiplyWe multiply 5x 3.. 1 1 3_5 ) 5 6 5 - 5__ 0 6 - 0 5__15 1 55 x 3 = >>>>>>>**Write your answer UNDER the 2nd and 3rd digits
Step 3 - SubtractWe subtract 15 from 15.. 1 1 3_5 ) 5 6 5 - 5__ 0 6 - 0 5__15- 1 5 0
Step 4 – Bring DownWe BRING DOWN the next digit.. _1 1 3_5 ) 5 6 5 - 5__ 0 6 - 0 5__15 - 1 5 0WAIT!!!!!!!
There Are No More Digits To Bring Down…So…
Step 5 –RemainderWhen there are no more numbers in the dividend to bring down, then the left over number becomes our Remainder 1 1 3 R 0 5 ) 5 6 5 - 5__ 0 6 - 0 5__ 1 5 - 1 50 <<< this is our remainder
I guess thoseDarn Monkeys won’t Stop Being Rowdy!!!!!
