Comparing and Ordering Integers Mrs. Young EMC 1
Before we begin… Let’s review!!! Which of the following are integers??? -78 0 34 0.9 -2 -99 9,124 -7.2 -78
Place these integers on the number line… 0, -6, 3, -8, +1
Comparing Integers In golf, scores are related to a number of strokes called par. A score of 1 under par is represented as –1. A score of 2 over par would be written as 2. Suppose you have a score of 2 over par and your friend has a score of 1 under par. Who has the lower score???
Use the number line! Plot the integers on the number line. Remember, negative integers are to the left of 0, and positive integers are to the right of 0.
Compare -1 and 2 When comparing two numbers on a number line, the number on the LEFT is the smaller number. Therefore, -1 < 2 OR we could say that 2 > -1
Compare the following pair of integers using > or <… 0 and –10 -9 and -5 -4 and +4 -7 and -1
Ordering Integers You can order a list of integers from least to greatest or greatest to least. Let’s order the following numbers from least to greatest: -8, 34, -3, 0, 12, 19, 10 Remember, the number that is on the far left is the least or smallest, and the number on the far right is the greatest.
You Try It! Order each set of integers from least to greatest : 12, -3, -8, 0, -1, 7 -21, -9, -15, -33, -1 -89, -77, 1, -45, 0, -100, -5
