Long Division A study guide for beginners
The Steps To Long Division Divide - the number inside the house with the number outside of the house Multiply - the number outside of the house by the number on top of the house Subtract - the number inside the house from the number below the inside number Check - to make sure the difference (the answer to a subtraction problem) is smaller that the number outside the house Bring Down- the next number in the dividend to add to the ones place in your sum Repeat - all the steps as many times as needed
1 st Step- Divide In the first step you divide the number outside the house called the divisor by the number inside the house called the dividend. 12 144 12 goes into 144 12 times so you put 12 on top of the house. 12
2 nd Step- Multiply Then you multiply the divisor by the quotient the number on top of the house, also the answer to a division problem. 12 144 12 - 144 ___ 12x12=144
3 rd Step- Subtract Next you subtract the dividend by the number underneath. The answer you get is your remainder. If the answer you get is zero the there is no remainder. 12 144 12 - 144 ___ 0
4 th Step- Check Check your difference to make sure it is lesser than the divisor. If it is not then you did something wrong. 12 144 12 - 144 ___ 0
5 th Step- Bring Down There is nothing left to bring down. 12 144 12 - 144 ___
6 th Step- Repeat You only use this step when you have numbers left over In the next few slides I will show you what to do if this problem occurs
1 st Step- Divide 8 1 9 7 8 can’t go into 1 , so it has to know go into 19. How many times does 8 go in 19? You can figure this out by multiplying. 8x1=8, 8x2=16, 8x3=24. It can go in 1 time because the answer you get afterwards is 8. And 8 can go into 19. But, sense 8x2=16 it can also go in 2 times; and you want it to go in as many times as possible with going over the number (19). So, that’s why it can’t go in 3 times because 8x3=24 and 24 is greater than 19. 24>19. 2
2 nd Step- Multiply 8 197 2 16 Then you multiply the divisor by the quotient And then you get 16
3 rd Step- Subtraction 8 197 2 16 Now you subtract 16 from 19 - ______ And then you get 3 3
4 th Step- Check 8 197 2 16 - ______ 3 3 is smaller than 8. So far we got the equation right.
5 th Step- Bring Down 8 19 7 2 16 ______ 3 7 Now you bring down the 7 in 197 and you get 37.
6 th Step- Repeat 8 197 16 - ______ 37 24 - ______ 5 Divide How many time does 8 go into 37? 4. 3. Subtract 37-32=5. 4. Check 5 is smaller 8, so we’re good. 5<8. 2. Multiply 8x4=32. 32 5. Bring Down there is nothing else to bring down so you’re remainder is 5.
6 th Step- Repeat 8 197 2 16 - ______ 37 4 - ______ 5 r5 32
Final Answer: 24 r5
All Done! Now you know how to long divide, let’s go over what we’ve learned!
REVIEW!!! Steps to Long Division Divide Divide the divisor into the dividend. How many Times does it go in? Multiply Multiply the divisor by the quotient. Subtract Subtract the number below the dividend from The dividend. Check Check to make sure That the answer you Got is smaller that The divisor. (Sometimes This step won’t be Necessary. Repeat Repeat all the steps If the sum you got Was not zero. Bring Down Bring down the next Number in the dividend And add it to the sum.
