3. I use the Mnemonic device my teacher taught me it goes like this: Daddy, Mommy, Sister, Brother. First you use Daddy. He divides. So you will divide the divisor in to the dividend but not the whole dividend just the first number you see to dived in to. Steps!!! 7 9 28 In this case you are dividing 7 into 9 ( or 9 by 7) . 1

4. Set It Up!!! When you set up a long division problem it should look like this: 928 7 This number is called the divisor. The divisor is the number you divide by. This number is called the dividend. The dividend is the number you dived in to.

5. The next step is to use Mommy. Mommy multiplies. You Multiply the divisor by the number you just put up and then you bring it down. 7 928 1 The number you brought up. 7 The number you bring down.

6. The third thing you use is Sister. She subtracts. You subtract the number you multiply from the divisor. 7 928 1 -7 22 2 The answer you got after you subtracted.

7. Next we use brother and he brings down. You bring down the next number in the problem. You then start again. 7 928 1 -7 2 2 The number you brought down which be comes the new dividend.

8. Answers!!!! This is how you get your answer. 77 7 928 1 -7 2 2 3 -2 1 1 8 2 -1 4 0 4 There is no more numbers left so you use brother to bring up and that number be comes the remainder. This number is called the quotient. Which is the answer in a division problem. r 4 This is called the remainder. R is often used to show that it is remainder

9. Check It!!!! To check a division problem you use multiplication. Which is the opposite of division. you do it like this: 132 x 7 924 + 4 928 That was your quotient so it is what you multiply. You multiply by your divisor. That is your answer so you have to add it to your remainder to get the right answer. This is the same number you divided in to so that means you did it right.
