In the learning out come model of teaching and learning, only
the Minimum Levels of Learning are defined but the
maximum levels of learning aren’t.
Boards demand Mastery Learning Model while NTA and other
agencies demand Deeper Learning Strategies.
The way out is step up learning through horizontal and
vertical learning integration.
There is no board/agency which gives either an employment
or an admission into higher education without testing

English Language Teaching – The Apocalyptic Cry
English Language Teaching – The Apocalyptic Cry
• Indeed, it is an apocalyptic cry. Lets observe.
• Studies reveal that 97% of the schools affiliated and their teachers at 97% of the times do not follow the
working models of LSRW.
Resultant observation :
• Majority of the teachers and students being not able to use proper intonation and diction.
• Lapses in pronunciation, analytical writing, reading comprehension, vocabulary building and usage to
construct sentences independently.
• Students and job seekers, even after completing 15 to 17 years of schooling, are failing to take verbal ability
test without further coaching at an extra cost to parents.
• Reports say Indian students fare very poorly at PISA and SAT.
• Peruse the statistics at GRE,CAT, SERVICE COMMISSION,IBPO,RRB,MAT,XLRI,TISS,TOEFL,IELTS and many
countless tests.
• This sums up to the lack of competencies and the inappropriate teaching learning practices in ELT.
Secondary ELT Strategies
The Grammar and Glamour way.
• Teach grammar inductively using Direct Method, Structure Method (Aural
and Oral Approach) and Total Physical Response Method.
Merits:
• Encourages thinking.
• Enables expression.
• Develops language sense.
• Interesting.
• Rote learning discouraged.
• Develops language mastery.
• Ample scope for activity, teaching aids.
Secondary ELT Strategies
ELT STRATEGIES
• Introduce more of analytical vocab learning exercises such
as Analogy, Syllogism, Vocab grids, Single Blank
Completion(MCQs with one correct option), Multiple
Blank Completion(MCQs with sequential correct options).
• Teachers can prepare using the existing text book only but
not beyond as sufficient number of content available in
the board prescribed books
• Can introduce alpha-numeric work sheets all from text
book content which enhances logic.
Secondary ELT Strategies
The LSRW….
LISTENING
• As per the age appropriation use audio and video clipping spanning
from 1 minute to 3 minutes.
• Strategy : PRT Play, Repeat and Test.(Work sheets, oral questionnaire,
allow cross questioning using the Thinking Routines like Circle of View
Points, What makes you say that, Zig Saw, Relay Baton etc)
• Listen and Speak, Listen and Direct, Listen and Argue, Listen and write,
Listen and complete are some of the strategies.
Secondary ELT Strategies
SPEAKING
• Use JAM, SAM, DEBATE, GROUP
DISCUSSION,SEMINAR,ELOCUTION,SKIT,MONOLOGUE AND
DIALOGUE,BOTH EXTEMPORE AND REHEARSED etc
Strategy :
• Set the norms and notify.
• Feed back and Feed Forward
• Record the evidence and document.
• Can use as a tool for Inter Disciplinary Connect and Assessment.
Secondary ELT Strategies
READING
• Reading for Comprehension and Reading for Pleasure are two major
aspects.
• Book Reviews. 15 Books a year. RSS… Read, Share and Spread.
• Passages can range from 200 to 600 words. Incorporate questions to
infer, substitute the argument, Identify the stance and direction etc.
• Train on the KWA….
• RC is the most important segment of testing across all the boards
and competitive examinations.
Secondary ELT Strategies
Writing
• The ultimate certifying process, tool and technique is writing across the global
testing arenas.
• Creative writing, Precise Writing, Note making, Letter Writing, Report Writing
and AWA. Portray them in the ASOW itself( What, when & how)
• Train on etiquettes of writing for board purposes. Follow board norms.
Strategy for AWA :
• Train on the SELECT approach.
• Taking stance in favor and against.
• Word limit but full essence expression
Co scholastics
COSCHOLASTICS
• Design a thorough Event/Activity Planner integrated with ASC and
ASOW.
• Co scholastics are not a segregated entertainment but very much
integrated with the learning outcomes of the scholastics.
• ELT activities have to in alignment with the above.
• Learning Objectives, Process, Process Owners, Outcomes have to
documented with the evidences of progress in attitude and skill
set of the participants.
• This serves the purpose and means of Anecdotal Records.
Co curricular
Body and Soul
• A sound mind lives in a sound body.
• The school shall be known for at least two out door sporting
events and two indoor sporting events.
• Set of properly qualified coaches to coach upon with ipsative
approach.
• The school shall cater to Fine Art learning areas with at least two
periods a week in primary till middle school and one in secondary
as this one sets the mood and tone for significant achievement in
academics too.
Skills for Life and Living.. The Life Skills
• They speak easy but live difficult. Who ? The subject of life
skills.
• Why ? Answers galore. Yet, what matters more is
maneuverability to success while not violating integrity of ones
heart, happiness, belief systems etc.
• Nothing but 21st century skills, The 6 C’s.
• LET’S OBSERVE IN MORE DETAIL as one would be incomplete
without these and how these would benefit for survival and be
successful.

21ST CENTURY SKILLS, THE 6 C’S.
Collaborative
Collaborative
• The ability to work effectively with others on a
common task; taking actions which respect the
needs and contributions of others; contributing to
and accepting the consensus; negotiating a win-win
situation to achieve the objectives as a team.
Critical Thinking
Critical Thinking
• The process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing,
applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating
information to reach an answer or conclusion"
"disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open-minded,
and informed by evidence.
Communicative
Communicative
• Effective communication is an important life skill that enables
us to understand better and connect with the people around
us. It allows us to build respect and trust, resolve differences
and foster environments where problem solving, caring,
affection and creative ideas can thrive.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive
• The ability to identify, use, understand, and manage
one’s own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress,
communicate effectively, empathize with others,
overcome challenges, defuse conflict and grow
comfortable with complexity.
Community Conscious
Community Conscious
• Being aware of the problems that different societies and communities
face on a day-to-day basis and to be conscious of the difficulties and
hardships of society. To increase the degree of autonomy and self-
determination in people and in communities in order to enable them
to represent their interests in a responsible and self-determined way,
acting on their own authority.
Creative
Creative
• A way of looking at problems or situations from a fresh
perspective that suggests unorthodox solutions (which
may look unsettling at first). It can be stimulated both by
an unstructured process such as brainstorming, and by a
structured process such as lateral thinking.
Technology Integration
Technology Integration
• Technology integration is not just having Smart Class Room but a sustained
and purposeful use where the best Information Processing happens to hone
the skill, enhance outlook and outreach. The IBL, PBL an PJBL way.
• Remember its gets obsolete at every frequent interval. Report says 40 million
existing IT professionals are obsolete in their Know How and only 4.8 % of
them are ready for bracing new knowledge, skills and a paradigm shift.
Technology-AI, ML and the Cloud
Technology-AI, ML and the Cloud
•Forbes has listed AI,ML and CLOUD in top 10 digital skills as part of the emerging tech portfolio
of skills.
•India alone require 6 to 12 million jobs in this space according to McKinsey study.
•Aspiring Minds an analytics firm’s study found that only 4.8% could write the correct logic and
less than 1.4% could write correct code.
•These can be introduced right in the schooling with age appropriate table.
•Schools have to act now as 80% of our engineers are unemployed in the streams they studied.
How about future certified engineers from our colleges which churn out 1.5 million engineering
graduates ?
•Never just introduce Robotics just in gaming mode but teach them to write algorithm----isn’t is a
mathematical proportion.
