Consumption
“According to the Department of Health and Human Services
[1989], an estimated eighteen million American adults have medical, social, health, or
safety problems directly related to alcohol use. For example, national studies indicate
that alcohol is involved in more than 50 percent of all fatal accidents. Drivers under the
age of 24 accounted for approximately 40 percent of all fatalities associated with drunk
driving in 1982 through 1989 [National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 1990].
Such alcohol abuse costs society an estimated $136 billion a year (not including the
cost of human suffering) and has influenced Congress to pass alcohol warning label
legislation [Department of Health and Human Services 1989].” (Patterson, 1992).

Consumption
“... which found that frequent alcohol users consider alcohol warning labels
to be significantly less believable and less favorable than occasional and
nonusers of alcohol. These findings represent an area of great concern for
authorities and organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving,
because young adults who consume the most alcohol see the least risk
associated with such behavior.” (Patterson, 1992).
