- Boards: -- Have a bottom-line legal responsibility -- Have moral ownership of the organization -- Have a charge to keep the mission at the center of everything
- Ask for examples: -- How your boards HAVE acknowledged their mission responsibility -- How they COULD have used mission to focus their work in more productive ways What are the primary inhibitors to mission focus? -- Ask them for examples
- Ask for their reactions to this list. What do they think I mean?
- Pairs – discuss and report back -- How would you “recruit for mission?” Do members know why they are there? -- Need explicit description – and appreciation – for what they bring to the table and how it contributes to mission fulfillment -- ESPECIALLY if their specific contributions aren’t directly tied to the work of the organization How do you orient and reinforce this?
- Connections to mission: -- Educational opportunities – big and small – re: the mission-based work that you do -- Regular sharing of info re: how you’re meeting mission -- Stories are particularly powerful – tell them, encourage them to re-tell them -- Particularly important when doing work with long timeline that can feel impossible (like ending violence) -- Evaluation – does what you measure/capture provide evidence of forward motion? Reflection Ask for examples of how they encourage talk abt how they, as a group, are contributing to mission Can be as simple as asking at the end of each meeting: How did we help move XYZ closer to its mission tonight? Need to facilitate regular self-evaluation – board and individual member Regular communication re: how their SPECIFIC contributions help advance the mission -- Especially when their roles do not correlate directly with the ‘content’ of your mission (e.g., the PR person, the finance person)
- Agenda: Does it include regular opportunities to learn something about your mission work? Is it structured around BOARD priorities? Small group work: What would a mission-focused agenda look like? Board roles and responsibilities clarity: Are you using board members’ talents appropriately? Do they know what’s expected of them, so they can respond accordingly? Situational leadership Use your members and their expertise, regardless of their office holder status. Value what they bring Expect them to bring it ED partnership You are a leadership TEAM Identify ways to support/empower the ED for success Board owes ED regular evaluation and feedback on performance, goals BBC as a workable model for board development.
