This document outlines the characters, locations, and lighting for a documentary about youth crime in Brent. It describes choosing a police officer, Azmeen, two drug-troubled youths - Daryl and Megan, a teacher, Mrs. Turner, and a youth worker, Ms. Horton to interview. Interviews will take place in a classroom to discuss the effect of drugs on schooling, and a professional office to represent the serious topic. Lighting will be natural but also eerie at night to build tension. The police interview may occur at the police station or elsewhere to portray the officer as active in her role.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. CHARACTERS - POLICE OFFICER
Our police officer is called Azmeen as this is her profession so we found it would be
easiest to use her as our officer. She will be wearing the police uniform which will
be beneficial for our documentary as it will appear realistic.
We have chosen her as our police officer because our documentary is about youth
crime in Brent therefore we thought she would be the perfect actor for the police
officer role as she is based in that area in her profession. She takes her job very
seriously therefore her facial expressions we will capture will cause a sense of
seriousness which is what we want for our audience to see within our documentary
as it is a serious topic.

3. CHARACTERS - DRUG TROUBLED
YOUTH
We have chosen a variety of students who we think we could use for our
documentary.
We have chosen Daryl to be in our documentary as his character will explain how
his family life had been troubled, therefore leading him down a path of drug use
that will give a different view of young people. This will take place in an interview
where he will be asked why he feels he needs to do things like take drugs and drink
alcohol both underage and illegally.
As he will be playing a stereotypical youth character he will wearing a hoodie, jeans
and trainers to represent himself as a troubled youth.
4. CHARACTER – DRUG TROUBLED
YOUTH
We thought that Megan would be a good person to cast as our other troubled
youth as she looks innocent to show that other types of youth can be influenced,
not just the stereotypical young males. Her storyline will revolve around being
pressured into taking drugs by her friends. Through an interview we will ask why
she decided to take the drugs and why she felt pressured from her friends.
To represent her innocence and to highlight that drug taking is an issue for both
genders and different personalities she will be wearing casual, fashionable clothes
that make her appear a normal middle-class teenager such as jeans, a jacket, a top
and boots or Converse-style shoes.
5. TEACHER
For the role of a teacher we have chosen to use Mrs Turner, our media teacher, as
she teaches as a profession so would be able to talk realistically about students as
we aim to do in our documentary. This will be done through an interview where we
will ask her to talk about the troubles of our fictional students as played by Megan
and Daryl. The teacher as played by Ms Turner will give her opinion on youth drug
crime such as how she feels about it and what communities can do to prevent it.
As she is a teacher she will be wearing smart clothing such as: a smart shirt,
cardigan, skirt and heels.
6. YOUTH WORKER
A type of character that we thought was key for our documentary was a youth
worker as they would be working with young offenders and know them
personally and would understand the background of the teenagers that get into
this type of crime. A youth worker would have more knowledge about it
therefore we felt this would be a good idea to get the youth worker’s opinion
about it.
For this character we have decided to use Ms Horton as we thought she would be
a good actor for this part as she can appear as a serious character and looks
knowledgeable. To mimic this knowledgeable look she will be wearing smart
casual clothing such as: flats, trousers, smart top and a cardigan and she will be
wearing glasses.
7. LIGHTING
Our documentary is one that is targeting a serious topic therefore we will
intentionally add lighting effects so we will keep it in a natural setting to keep the
lighting natural. To emphasise the danger of the topic and the seriousness we will
show scenes at night where the lighting will come from lampposts in an urban
area to create eeriness to attract the audience. It would be in an area that British
audiences will easily relate to such as an urban street to show that this topic is
not just in the area we have chosen (Brent), but also is a national issue for many
youths. Typically by building tension it would attract young adult audiences so we
will have this specific part in our opening so that it will explicitly target our
audience.
8. LOCATION - CLASSROOM
A classroom is easily accessible for us to use and it also fits in with our
documentary as we will be interviewing students, therefore we can use it for
the interviews where we ask the drug troubled students to give their opinion
about why they take these drugs and what situation they are in now. By basing
it in a school and particularly a classroom we can show a documentary that
does not just focus on the use of drugs but how it effects their schoolwork. It
would attract our target audience as young adults such as 16-25 year olds
would either still be in school or would have just left so it is a familiar place to
be where they may even feel they can relate specifically to the topics covered.
9. LOCATION - PROFESSIONAL
OFFICE
For our documentary we will need to interview a teacher and a youth worker to
get their opinion about the students specifically and in general young people
taking drugs and why they partake in this crime. As it is a serious topic we will
need to set it in a professional place in order to represent this seriousness to
the audience. We will place these interviews in an office as this is where youth
workers and teachers can be found working therefore it shows that our
documentary has travelled to get the best point of views that we can.
10. LOCATION FOR POLICE INTERVIEW
For the police officer interview we may be able to have it take place in the
police station that Azmeen works, however if this is not available we will base
it outside to show that she is an active police officer.
If this is unavailable we may have to film it in a house where we will try and do
the interview in a quiet, professional looking area so that it appears as serious
as the rest of the documentary.
