The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Mise en scene
1. Mise-en-scene
What does mise-en-scene mean?
It means placed in a scene. Translated from the French word. The term was first
used in theatre and referred to the way in which a director organised the stage.
In media it is used to describe everything that is seen in shot
What are the 6 key areas of mise-en-scene?
As itmeans‘everythinginshot’there we focuson.
Colour
Costume
Props
Set/Location
Blocking+ Perforemance
Lighting
Colour:
How is colour used in the 3 below pictures?
Crueldevil
Colour is symbolic, not only to costume but also to lighting.
Red – connotes anger, blood and death. The blood of the dogs.
White – The white on the outside tells us that to the outside world she is trying to
bed pure and innocent however the red inside contrasts this.
Black and White Hair – shows she has a split personality, maybe mental health
issues.
Cinderella
White – pure innocent
Blue – Sadness, the dark blue foreshadows bad emotions.
Costume:
What can we interpret from these costumes?
2. Mise-en-scene
The EastEnders cast shown here are stereotypically dressed in chavvy, untidy
clothes, puffer jackets are normally connoted as quite pikey. In addition the slanted
hats support this as they are to try and look cool, not for practical use.
Sherlock and Watson dressed as upper class men, Sherlock’s neat scarf
accompanied with Watson and his own long trench coat. Their hair is perfectly
positioned, looked after and cared for, also the countless amounts of layers tell us
that they are upper class.
Props:
Option 1 - You have to provide props for a tense police interview between two
officers and one suspected murderer. Decide what props you would incorporate
and how the actors should be directed to use them.
Option 2 – You have to provide props for a romantic meal between two characters
on their first date. Decide what props you would incorporate and how the actors
should be directed to use them.
Props needed:
How would actors be directed to use them:
Location:
Can be a purpose built set or a real location
A set is what is built to accompany the film or TV program, location is where you
film in ‘the real world’ sets are beneficial for big production companies as they can
build sets tailored to suit the films credential.
Blocking/Performance:
3. Mise-en-scene
Blocking refers to the positioning and movement of actors within the frame,
both in relation to each other and in relation to the camera (which
represents us, the audience)
Performance covers all aspects of the actual acting – gesture, expression,
accent etc
Lighting:
How is lighting being used to create mood in the following examples?
LOW KEY HIGH KEY
High Key lighting is when there is little shadow or dark areas and the frame is very
bright. It has little dramatic effect.
Low Key is where the shadows are very dark, this allows for high contrast between
light and dark in the frame. Shadows are used to add dramatic effect.
