This document is the foreword and preface sections of a dictionary of mining, mineral, and related terms published by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1996. It discusses the need for an updated dictionary given technological and regulatory changes. It describes the collaborative process between the Bureau of Mines and the American Geological Institute to develop the new dictionary over 5 years with input from experts. The dictionary contains over 28,500 terms focused on mining and excludes some related fields.
