Key words for searching for assignments

Try using a mind map like this to

• Clarify your topic in your own mind
• Learn how to break down your topic into logical
sections – useful for writing your assignment
• Think of other possible words you could use to
  search with
• Try different combinations of key words in your
  searches
• Research terms used in other countries (some
articles may be British or Australian, for
  example).
How do you find key words?

• Look closely at the terms words used in your assignment and
start with the most important ones
• Think about similar words for each of these
• Search in the Library catalogue and look at the Subject terms
listed on the left of your results screen:
How to start searching
1. Broad Search
Search for information using the main concept (or two) related to
your topic. Use this type of search when looking for basic
background information.

2. Brainstorm for keywords as in slide 1

3. Narrow your topic based on information you have found

4. Specific Search
Now look for specific information based on your narrowed down
topic. Combine key concepts using the words you have brainstormed.

Getting Too Many Irrelevant Results?
Add more search terms.

Getting Too Few Relevant Results?
