Neustar is a fast growing provider of enterprise services in telecommunications, online advertising, Internet infrastructure, and advanced technology. Neustar has engaged Think Big Analytics to leverage Hadoop to expand their data analysis capacity. This session describes how Hadoop has expanded their data warehouse capacity, agility for data analysis, reduced costs, and enabled new data products. We look at the challenges and opportunities in capturing 100′s of TB’s of compact binary network data, ad hoc analysis, integration with a scale out relational database, more agile data development, and building new products integrating multiple big data sets.
This was presented at NHN on Jan. 27, 2009.
It introduces Big Data, its storages, and its analyses.
Especially, it covers MapReduce debates and hybrid systems of RDBMS and MapReduce.
In addition, in terms of Schema-Free, various non-relational data storages are explained.
Introduction to Microsoft’s Master Data Services (MDS)James Serra
Master Data Services is bundled with SQL Server 2012 to help resolve many of the Master Data Management issues that companies are faced with when integrating data. In this session, James will show an overview of Master Data Services 2012, including the out of the box Web UI, the highly developed Excel Add-in, and how to get started with loading MDS with your data.
At our March Data Analytics Meetup, Dan Rodriguez and Cherian Mathew demonstrated the variations in Microsoft Azure programs and how they are impacting digital transformation.

Traditional data warehouse ETL has become too slow, too complicated, and too expensive to address the torrent of new data sources and new analytic approaches needed for decision making. The new ETL environment is already looking drastically different.
In this webinar, Ralph Kimball, founder of the Kimball Group, and Manish Vipani, Vice President and Chief Architect of Enterprise Architecture at Kaiser Permanente will describe how this new ETL environment is actually implemented at Kaiser Permanente. They will describe the successes, the unsolved challenges, and their visions of the future for data warehouse ETL.
Not to be confused with Oracle Database Vault (a commercial db security product), Data Vault Modeling is a specific data modeling technique for designing highly flexible, scalable, and adaptable data structures for enterprise data warehouse repositories. It is not a replacement for star schema data marts (and should not be used as such). This approach has been used in projects around the world (Europe, Australia, USA) for the last 10 years but is still not widely known or understood. The purpose of this presentation is to provide attendees with a detailed introduction to the technical components of the Data Vault Data Model, what they are for and how to build them. The examples will give attendees the basics for how to build, and design structures when using the Data Vault modeling technique. The target audience is anyone wishing to explore implementing a Data Vault style data model for an Enterprise Data Warehouse, Operational Data Warehouse, or Dynamic Data Integration Store. Build new applications or extend your existing applications into the cloud using familiar technology and tools in new ways to achieve web-capable scalability. Focus on building solutions—let Windows® Azure™ manage the infrastructure.
Windows Azure is Microsoft's application platform for the public cloud. You can use this platform in many different ways. For instance, you can use Windows Azure to build a web application that runs and stores its data in Microsoft datacenters. You can use Windows Azure just to store data, with the applications that use this data running on-premises (that is, outside the public cloud). You can use Windows Azure to create virtual machines for development and test or to run SharePoint and other applications.

Migrating its entire virtualized environment from VMware to Hyper-V has helped Miele & Cie, an appliance manufacturer shrink its server space by more than 50 percent and improve productivity.
To add to the new flexible and energy-efficient data center, Miele has also ‘saved an estimated 35 percent in licensing costs by going with a Microsoft virtualization solution’.
Hyper-V has helped AcXess fill that much needed virtualization gap with an improvised and more competent functionality and reduced data center and hardware costs.
According to Tom Elowson, President and Cofounder, AcXess, “Hyper-V has made all the difference. It is amazing to think we have grown our business 300 percent over the last few years with Hyper-V. ”

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
