This document discusses a renewable generation-based microgrid testbed. The testbed is located at the Power & Energy Systems Lab and allows for testing of microgrids that utilize renewable energy generation sources like solar and wind power. The microgrid testbed provides a controlled environment to study the integration and control of various renewable generation technologies within a small-scale power grid.

Intentional islanding describes the condition in which a microgrid or a portion of the power grid,
which consists of a load and a distributed generation (DG) system, is isolated from the remainder
of the utility system. In this situation, it is important for the microgrid to continue to provide
adequate power to the load. Under normal operation, each DG inverter system in the microgrid
usually works in constant current control mode in order to provide a preset power to the main
grid. When the microgrid is cut off from the main grid, each DG inverter system must detect this
islanding situation and must switch to a voltage control mode. In this mode, the microgrid will
provide a constant voltage to the local load. This paper describes a control strategy that is used to
implement grid-connected and intentional-islanding operations of distributed power generation.
This paper proposes an intelligent load-shedding algorithm for intentional islanding and an
algorithm of synchronization for grid reconnection.

In this paper, a feasibility study has been done utilizing real time solar irradiance data for a 1MW grid-connected PV system in Qassim region in the middle of Saudi Arabia. The analysis has been done using both technical and economic indicators. Technical performance indicators are; Yield Factor, Capacity Factor and Performance Ratio. Economic indicators are; Levelized cost of energy and simple payback time. The simulation results show high energy productivity, and both technical and economic indicators are high compared with similar systems in different countries. Also, the greenhouse gas emission reduction has been estimated. The prices of PV modules and balance of system components are up to date. The analysis results proved the viability of the proposed system supposing there is no any governmental incentives or grants which could make big difference.

Islanding refers to a condition where distributed generators (DGs) inject power solely to the local load after electrical separation from power grid. Several islanding detection methods (IDMs) categorized into remote, active, and passive groups have been reported to detect this undesirable state. In active techniques, a disturbance is injected into the DG’s controller to drift a local yardstick out of the permissible range. Although this disturbance leads to more effective detections even in well-balanced island, it raises the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output current under the normal operation conditions. This paper analyzes the power quality aspect of the modified sliding mode controller as a new active IDM for grid-connected photovoltaic system (GCPVS) with a string inverter. Its performance is compared with the voltage positive feedback (VPF) method, a well-known active IDM. This evaluation is carried out for a 1 kWp GCPVS in MATLAB/Simulink platform by measuring the output current harmonics and THD as well as the efficiency under various penetration and disturbance levels. The output results demonstrate that since the proposed disturbance changes the amplitude of the output current, it does not generate harmonics/subharmonics. Thereby, it has a negligible adverse effect on power quality. It is finally concluded that the performance of the sliding mode-based IDM is reliable from the standpoints of islanding detection and power quality.

My topic of thesis is about constructing prediction model of wind energy and solar energy by artificial neural network with genetic algorithm.
Because the electricity price in Nordic area is determined in advance, it is beneficial to construct prediction model for renewable energy. With the mentioned prediction model, we can construct hybrid system (wind energy and solar energy) to produce hydrogen. Then the fuel cell can produce electricity and connect to the network by using the constructed prediction model. In our prediction model, the critical parameters like 10 minutes average wind speed and deviation for wind energy could be used as historical data to train to artificial neural network (ANN). We also hope to utilize genetic algorithm (GA) to speed up the ANN training and hybrid system scale design.

A new topology of a hybrid distributed generator based on photovoltaic and wind-driven permanent magnet synchronous generator is proposed. In this generator, the sources are connected together to the grid with the help of only a single boost converter followed by an inverter. Thus, compared to earlier schemes, the proposed scheme has fewer power converters. A model of the proposed scheme in the d − q-axis reference frame is developed. Two low-cost controllers are also proposed for the new hybrid scheme to separately trigger the dc–dc converter and the inverter for tracking the maximum power from both sources. The integrated operations of both proposed controllers for different conditions are demonstrated through simulation and experimentation. The steady-state performance of the system and the transient response of the controllers are also presented to demonstrate the successful operation of the new hybrid system. Comparisons of experimental and simulation results are given to validate the simulation model.

Consider the power network as shown in fig.1
Now if we disconnect the line AB from the infinite transmission grid there will be an isolated region . The D1, D2 are power sources (eg : inverter , solar power cells ). The power generated in this region is fed to the island only.
We see that there no longer is any control over the island voltage at the bus X . Also there is no mechanism here for control of frequency.
This state is referred to as islanding.

Presented at the Sandia Photovoltaic PV Performance Modeling Collaborative (PVPMC) Workshop in May 2013. The concepts of self-reference irradiance, Isc linearity checks, and deviations in efficiency relative to reference conditions (and associated adjustments involving all three) are introduced in addition to the primary topic at hand (PVsyst one-diode model parameter optimization based on measured data). A common vernacular for the deviation in efficiency Eta relative (Rel.) to reference conditions is "delta Eta Rel." (if reference conditions are STC, then it's "delta Eta Rel. STC"). However, in reality, it's "dev Eta Rel." & "dev Eta Rel. STC", respectively.
New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) initiative seeks to fundamentally transform the way electricity is distributed, generated and used across the State. Utilities are being challenged to adapt their business models and distribution infrastructure to meet these new goals. REV also presents an opportunity for utilities to provide their customers with a broader range of services that lead to a more diverse, innovative and resilient energy infrastructure.
A key focus of REV is the transition to local distributed energy platforms including microgrids, which can be operated in conjunction with the grid or independently in emergencies.
