Final Sunseed Workshop Presentation

  1. 1. Smart Metering System for Microgrids Mehdi Savaghebi, Yajuan Guan, and Josep M. Guerrero Dept. Energy Technology, Aalborg University, Denmark
  2. 2. Outline  Introduction  Smart Metering System in AAU Intelligent MG Lab  EUDP Sino-Danish Project  Future Works 2
  3. 3. 3 Introduction Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) consists of smart meters, data storage and management and communication systems.  AMI collects information from the end users and measures the energy consumption of the consumers as well as the generating power of the distributed generation system. SM provides information and/or alarms about consumption, events, power quality, tampering, etc. Conventional Electrical Meter Collect Data manually Customer Manual Billing Smart Meter Communication Interface/protocol Customer Gateway Communication Interface/protocol Datebase and Management system Metering architectures comparison of a conventional electrical meter and a smart meter
  4. 4. 4 Smart Metering System in AAU Intelligent MG Labs Ethernet Communication DC Power Line AC Power Line The laboratory is based on 6 workstations • 4 DC-AC converters, • LCL-filters, • ABB Motorized change-over switches • Two Kamstrup Smart-meters.  Configuration
  5. 5. 6  Communication Smart Meters  Collect data from the end consumers  Transmit data through LAN Data Concentrator  Receive the data  Transmit the data Utility Central (MDM)  Process the data received through Wide Area Network (WAN) 2-way 2-way Smart Metering System in AAU Intelligent MG Labs
  6. 6. 7  Smart meter collects the measurement data from the consumer and then transmit the data optically from the meter to a local computer which works as a data collector.  Point-to-point communication.  Communication - Optical Head Smart Metering System in AAU Intelligent MG Labs Reading events logReading meter data METERTOOL METERTOOL
  7. 7. 8  The data collected by smart meter can be transmitted from the meter to the utility central collection point by internet lines (TCP/IP).  Smart meter is able to communicate with an IP module connected via a LAN cable or with GPRS.  Communication – Internet based on TCP/IP • Two extra IP modules (IP101i), • A switch/ a router, • A Zigbee plug-in module, • An In-home display system. 8. 8. 9  Radio Mesh, Power Line Carrier (PLC), Zigbee, 3G, GPRS, etc.  Other Communication Methods  Potential Benefits  From the consumer’s perspective • Estimate bills from the collected information and thus manage their energy consumptions to reduce their electric bills using in-home display .  From the utility’s perspective • Realize real-time pricing, by which the companies can limit the maximum electricity consumption and tries to encourage users to reduce their demands in the periods of peak load. • System operator can terminate or re-connect electricity supply to any customer with proper mechanism remotely in order to optimize the power flow or ensure power quality according to the information sent from the demand sides.
