Micro & Macro
1. Micro-Macro
Micro are the small aspects/elements in a movie such as Mise-en-scene, sound, editing, camera angles,
movements and position. While macro is about the larger themes that are connoted by micro such as
narrative, representation, genre and audience using micros.
Examples:
1-
A wide shot has been used to set the scene of the room, shot-reversed-shot was used to show the
conversation between the two main characters. The elements of mise-en-scene have been used here to
create a contrast between this room and the outside. This has been created using lighting, the room is
chiaroscuro while the outside is notan. This creates a dark atmosphere around the characters in the
scene because of the notan lighting in the background which creates this big contrast between the
scenes. The screen print below shows a really good use of lighting to show that this character is two-faced
as part of his face is chiaroscuro and the other is notan. The dialogue of this character also gives
you an uneasy feeling, this is because he talks in an offensive way and his choice of words for example “I
don’t like your kind of people”.
2. These are the elements of micro and when we analyse these you get to know about macro, so the genre
of this film can be known as crime, drama and gangster because of the time it was set in which we know
because of mise-en-scene. The audience for this type of movie would be adults, mostly male. This is
because the movie contains strong language and violence scenes.
2-
This scene in ‘V for Vendetta’ is set underground and is a fight scene full with actions. This is created
using micro elements such as jump cuts, sound effects, time stretch and other elements.
The macro elements of this movie e.g. genre could the action and thriller. The audience is above 18
years I would imagine because the fighting scene contains lots of blood and the strong offensive
language used.
