Metallic and Non-Metallic Minerals

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Rocks and Minerals make up the earth’s crust. All rocks are composed of One or more minerals. Rocks do not have a definite chemical composition, while minerals have a definite chemical composition. The minerals and rocks provide us with metals and Chemicals. The amount of minerals present in a rock vary greatly. The rock which has a large concentration of a particular mineral is called the ore of that mineral. At Present, there are more than 3000 known minerals. Minerals can be classified on the basis of its physical and chemical properties, that is, its composition and use. On the basis of composition, minerals are broadly classified into metallic and non metallic.
  • #5 Metallic Minerals are generally found as ores. Metals, such as Au, Cu, and Fe, are obtained from metallic minerals. Generally found in igneous and metamorphic rocks, these minerals are hard and lustrous. There are two types of metallic minerals - Ferrous and Non-ferrous. These are some of the iron ores(hematite, limonite and ironstone). These are some of the Copper Ores (enargite, tenenite and Cuprite) Gold cannot be found mixed with other elements as it is less reactive.
  • #6 gold, zinc, iron ore, manganese ore, bauxite, silver, lead, tin, copper and chromite.
  • #7 Read para from TB << Click >> Some Nitrates include Ammonium Nitrate(NH4NO3), Sodium Nitrate (NaNO3) and Lithium Nitrate (LiNO3). << Click >> Rock Salt is obtained from mines using the room and pillar method where first some area is blasted and then dug up. << Click >> Sulfur is obtained or recovered from oil and gas production is known as brimstone, or elemental sulphur. << Click >> Coal is obtained by underground or surface mining.
  • #8 Mica, Limestone, Dolomite, Asbestos, Magnesite, Kyanite, Sillimanite and Gypsum.
