Street lights commonly use sodium vapor discharge lamps that produce light through ionizing gas with electrodes when high voltage is applied, without a filament. Discharge lamps have a glass tube containing gas at low pressure with electrodes at each end, and work by ionizing the gas which causes electrons and ions to collide and produce light of different colors depending on the gas used, such as yellow light from sodium.
