Editor's Notes

  1. The Need of the Child and Family Severe Hearing Impairment This family needs that Lily age 4 is a child with a severe hearing impairment recently moved to Toronto that she needs special care in the child care and introduced to the new environment, because she never been in child care center and never been left with stranger. As an early childhood educator I need to be aware the environment that feet to the child. Reducing back ground noise in the room and speak loud and clear facing the child at normal talk without exaggerate or being very slow. Her parent have a hard time to find services and asked to find some of services that can helps them to be familiar with a new country. Her parents are having language barrier and it is difficult for them to communicate easily to find all sources they need. As an early childhood educator I try to provide as much as I can to help this family looking for services around Toronto such as help for a child with a severe hearing impairment services and family services, community services, child care services and school services that can help parents to have English as a second language class or employment services. (given scenario in class assignment).
  2. Severe Hearing Impairment What is hearing impairment? According to Encyclopedia of Children Health “ Conductive hearing loss: a usually temporary interference with the reception of sound from the outer ear to the middle or inner ear. Sensorineural hearing impairment : a permanent abnormality of the cochlear hair cells of the inner ear, the auditory nerve, or the auditory center of the brain. Mixed hearing impairment : a combination of conductive and sensorineural impairments” http://www.healthofchildren.com/G-H/Hearing-Impairment.html . According to my scenario I have been given that “Lily has been diagnosed as a child with a severe hearing impairment”. According to my reading package “Sever hearing impairment is the child will not hear any normal conversation and only a few sound of loud speech”. According to Encyclopedia of Children Health “A child with severe hearing impairment requires a hearing aid to hear conversations” http://www.healthofchildren.com/G-H/Hearing-Impairment.html . I think as an Early Childhood Educator I need to provide this information may help this family to get benefit from it. In addition I will infuse sign language in to the classroom environment, uses of manual communication and modify activities that include the child with special need.
  3. Severe Hearing Impairment Hearing loss is a hidden condition resulting in communication problems that can eventually get in the way with learning and social development. Image web: http://www.acoustics.org/press/133rd/nelson1.gif
  4. Severe Hearing impairment The role of Early Childhood Educator As an Early Childhood Educator I will try to have a positive relationship with the child so the child trust me, also have very specific communication tools between the staff and the parent. For example have a communication diary that goes back and forth between the staff and parent that helps to avoid miss information about the child progress and development. I also ask to get professional specialist that work with me, staff and parent to have support for the child with special need to modify activities, exercises and change to the environment that can be appropriate. For example have a resource teacher come in every week to guide the staff and the child. Some of the modifications I would make to the physical environment are to arrange the environment with short furniture’s that makes the child can see around easily.
  5. Severe Hearing impairment The role of Early Childhood Educator Also using carpet will reduce back ground noise that interferes with communication I will want to make sure that background noise levels and loud music do not compete with conversation. A child with a hearing loss needs to see as well as hear what I say to Lily. I do not need to exaggerate lip movements but I must speak clearly and make sure position myself so Lily not faces bright light and make sure visual barriers are minimized so that communication is possible. Uses none verbal communication for transition such as picture, flash lights, also if the child playing alone use some touching shoulder and taping to get attention. As an Early Childhood Educator I need to be role model to the children other children see how I behave and will copy me. If I develop effective communication strategies, other children will, too. If I ignore the hearing-impaired child, other children also may do the same thing and it affects the child self-team and lead to isolation.
  6. Agencies: As an Early Childhood Educator I look for agencies that Lily and her parents can use and get benefit from it. Canadian Hearing Society (CHS/SCO) offer up to 17 Services. For example, Accessibility Consulting Services, Sign Language, literacy and basic skills, Educational Support Services…etc. from a phone call I made I got an information that services are free for children under 18 years only need health cards, but children under 3years need to be seen in hospital. For adult the services is depend on what services is to verify the fees. There are waiting for services for children 3 to 18 years form 7 to 8 months for adults 4 to 6 weeks. This family and Lily will benefits form this agency because it will be easy to communicate for them in their own language and it is free service for a child.   Mailing Address: 271 Spadina Road Toronto, ON M5R 2V3 General Office Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This includes most client programs and services. (416) 928 2504 Phone (877) 215 9530 TTY Toll Free (416) 928 2501 Hearing Aid Program (416) 928 2508 Mandarin/Cantonese (416) 928 2523 Fax http://www.chs.ca/
  7. I also believe that this parent need to get benefit from other services because they are new to the country have very less English language to communicate also may need to look for job or place to live, childcare space for other two children. Therefore I think that then blow services included most of services and provide childcare.
