HEARING IMPAIRMENTS
• Hearing impairment
  means that “a child has
  lost some hearing in one
  and both ears.” (Reading
  Package, part 1, page 1)
• Shahena has a severe
  hearing impairment.
• In terms of Severe
  Impairment, “the child will
  not hear any normal
  conversation and only a
  few sounds of loud
  speech.” (Reading
  Package, part 1, page 1)
EFFECTS OF HEARING
IMPAIRMENT ON DEVELOPMENT

ADAPTATION AND
           ACCOMMODATIONS
• “Smile and maintain eye contact
  during the time you are talking to
  a child who is hearing impaired.
• Speak slowly and clearly, but do
  not exaggerate. Be expressive,
  but not overly so.
• If a word is not understood, try
  another word. Demonstrate if
  possible.
• Use sign language only if you're
  qualified. Otherwise, incorrect
  information may be conveyed.” (

VISUAL COMMUNICATION
• Visual communication helps
  Shahena to improve
  communication skills.
• Visual supports make it easier
  to understand and
  communicate for her.
• Using the same words every
  time by showing pictures
  teaches her those words.
• For example, I can teach
  Shahena what is expected,
  how toys are used, and what
  the schedule is in the daycare.

HEARING IMPAIRMENTS • Hearing impairment means that “a child has lost some hearing in one and both ears.” (Reading Package, part 1, page 1) • Shahena has a severe hearing impairment. • In terms of Severe Impairment, “the child will not hear any normal conversation and only a few sounds of loud speech.” (Reading Package, part 1, page 1)

  • 4. ADAPTATION AND ACCOMMODATIONS • “Smile and maintain eye contact during the time you are talking to a child who is hearing impaired. • Speak slowly and clearly, but do not exaggerate. Be expressive, but not overly so. • If a word is not understood, try another word. Demonstrate if possible. • Use sign language only if you're qualified. Otherwise, incorrect information may be conveyed.” ( ada.ky.gov website)

VISUAL COMMUNICATION • Visual communication helps Shahena to improve communication skills. • Visual supports make it easier to understand and communicate for her. • Using the same words every time by showing pictures teaches her those words. • For example, I can teach Shahena what is expected, how toys are used, and what the schedule is in the daycare.

  • 8. SUPPORTING SHAHENA AND HER FAMILY • Shahena has a severe hearing impairment and uses hearing aids. • They are new in Toronto. • She lives with her mother and her sister. • Her mother speaks limited English. • Based on that, I will provide support and help for them.
