Mrs. Hunt & Mrs. Allonby
About Your Teachers:
• Mrs. Hunt will teach on Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday morning.
• Mrs Allonby will teach on Wednesday
afternoon, Thursday and Friday.
• Mrs Procter will teach one pm or am
session each week. Mrs Procter teaches PE,
DT and French.
What does your child need in
year 4?
Nothing other than two
fabulous teachers!
Please label everything your child owns!
Their book bag should be in every day, containing their two
books and diary in their reading pack.
Their PE kits should come into school on day one and only go
home at the end of each half term for washing.
Pencil cases are allowed, although these are brought in at
their own risk.
Musical instruments on a Monday.
Toast money.

Our Morning Procedures
• All children will come into
school and settle into their
morning places.
• Each child is to choose a quiet
activity:
• read their own class library
book,
• Learn their spellings,
• Work with a number.
This Year . . .
Reading:
We are trying to encourage a wider reading diet.
During this time, at least once a week, your child will read to an
adult in class. Please try to listen to you child read at home
each week.
You child will choose from the class library and also bring home
a school library book.
We are trying to encourage higher level skills like inference and
deduction.
Try to question your child about what they have read:
Why do you think the character acted like that?
Why might the discovery of the key be important?
Writing:
We are trying to encourage a more mature writing
style.
We will look at a variety of writing throughout the
year: historical stories, poetry, stories with morals or
dilemmas, explanation texts, play scripts, newspaper
writing, recounts and by studying each area we will
build on our writing skills.
We will look at techniques such as: embedded clauses,
adverbial phrasing, and paragraphing.
This year your child is able
to try and achieve the
highest accolade ever!
THE PEN!
Spellings
We have 26 letters, but we have around 44
sounds and several hundred ways to write
those sounds.
So, while sounds - or phonics - are important in learning to
spell, they are insufficient on their own.
How words make their meanings
Sounds are important in learning to spell, but just as
important are the morphemes in words. Morphemes are
the meaningful parts of words.
For example, “jumped” has two morphemes - “jump” and
“ed”. “Jump” is easily recognised as meaningful, but “ed” is
also meaningful because it tells us that the jump happened
in the past.
Numeracy:
Knowing our times tables is imperative!
This year sees your child working with
more complex methods of calculation,
particularly written methods.
We will also work with angles, area and
perimeter, decimals, negative numbers
etc.
WOPPS
You child will learn an instrument!
As part of a Government initiative every child
will learn a musical instrument.
Harris Primary has a long tradition of brass
music, and therefore every Monday afternoon we
are joined and taught by the peripatetic expert
Mr. Bell.
TOPIC
New Curriculum 2014
History: Ancient Greece and a light touch
on the Romans.
Geography: Canada, local area studies and
mapping skills.
Homework
In addition to reading and spellings:
Homework will be set by Mrs. Hunt once a
week. The homework will vary and are
expected back in by the following week.
Play times
• Mr. James’s activities
• Mrs. Wright’s room
• Computer lottery
• Trim trail, football, netball
• New toys

Meet the teacher 2014

  • 1. Harris Primary School Mrs. Hunt & Mrs. Allonby
  • 2. About Your Teachers: • Mrs. Hunt will teach on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning. • Mrs Allonby will teach on Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday. • Mrs Procter will teach one pm or am session each week. Mrs Procter teaches PE, DT and French.
  • 3. What does your child need in year 4? Nothing other than two fabulous teachers! Please label everything your child owns! Their book bag should be in every day, containing their two books and diary in their reading pack. Their PE kits should come into school on day one and only go home at the end of each half term for washing. Pencil cases are allowed, although these are brought in at their own risk. Musical instruments on a Monday. Toast money.

  • 6. Our Morning Procedures • All children will come into school and settle into their morning places. • Each child is to choose a quiet activity: • read their own class library book, • Learn their spellings, • Work with a number.
  • 7. This Year . . . Reading: We are trying to encourage a wider reading diet. During this time, at least once a week, your child will read to an adult in class. Please try to listen to you child read at home each week. You child will choose from the class library and also bring home a school library book. We are trying to encourage higher level skills like inference and deduction. Try to question your child about what they have read: Why do you think the character acted like that? Why might the discovery of the key be important?
  • 8. Writing: We are trying to encourage a more mature writing style. We will look at a variety of writing throughout the year: historical stories, poetry, stories with morals or dilemmas, explanation texts, play scripts, newspaper writing, recounts and by studying each area we will build on our writing skills. We will look at techniques such as: embedded clauses, adverbial phrasing, and paragraphing.
  • 9. This year your child is able to try and achieve the highest accolade ever! THE PEN!
  • 10. Spellings We have 26 letters, but we have around 44 sounds and several hundred ways to write those sounds. So, while sounds - or phonics - are important in learning to spell, they are insufficient on their own. How words make their meanings Sounds are important in learning to spell, but just as important are the morphemes in words. Morphemes are the meaningful parts of words. For example, “jumped” has two morphemes - “jump” and “ed”. “Jump” is easily recognised as meaningful, but “ed” is also meaningful because it tells us that the jump happened in the past.
  • 11. Numeracy: Knowing our times tables is imperative! This year sees your child working with more complex methods of calculation, particularly written methods. We will also work with angles, area and perimeter, decimals, negative numbers etc.
  • 12. WOPPS You child will learn an instrument! As part of a Government initiative every child will learn a musical instrument. Harris Primary has a long tradition of brass music, and therefore every Monday afternoon we are joined and taught by the peripatetic expert Mr. Bell.
  • 13. TOPIC New Curriculum 2014 History: Ancient Greece and a light touch on the Romans. Geography: Canada, local area studies and mapping skills.
  • 14. Homework In addition to reading and spellings: Homework will be set by Mrs. Hunt once a week. The homework will vary and are expected back in by the following week.
  • 15. Play times • Mr. James’s activities • Mrs. Wright’s room • Computer lottery • Trim trail, football, netball • New toys
