Media Literacy
 The development of the new media gives us many
possibilities, but there are also many risks.
 It is important to have this competence, if you
want to get along in our digital world.
 It is absolutely essential, if we are looking at the
world of working, but also for our society and
international politics.

Media Literacy
 It is the aim of our government that all of the
secondary schools get modern hard- and software
(2011-2016) .
 It was a great success, because in our days 70 %
of the schools have already got the necessary
equipment.
 1 Mio € (1,4 Mio $) are planned for the project in
2013.
Media Literacy
 The information, the knowledge and the education
concerning media gets more and more important
for our society in the future.
 The new media gives us many possibilities, but
there are also many risks.
 Considering that many people use the new media
and the Internet, we must definitely find a way to
protect our children.
Media Literacy for our schools
 Because of the technological changes in our
politics concerning our youth, the job market, the
society and the education, it is crucial to support
the media competence of our students.
 That‘s the reason why our government developed
the program called „Medienkompetenz macht
Schule“ (Media Literacy for our schools) with 10
different aspects:

1 The quality of our lessons
 Due to the digital media we have the chance to
make our students organize themselves, to give
them the possibility to learn according to their
individual needs and also to improve their social
learning.
 The role of e-learning, information,
communication and learning together in the
Internet will get more and more important in all
of the subjects at school.
2 Teacher training and
in-service training
The teachers involved in Rhineland-Palatinate are
trained in multiple related cooperation:
 MOODLE (www.lernenonline.bildung-rp.de)
 iMedia: (http://imedia.bildung-rp.de)
Workshops & Presentations
 SWR: School television (http://www.planet-schule.de)
 etc.
3 Youth media protection
 Teachers are qualified to “youth media protection
advisers“ at their school and also deal with issues of
a modern data protection (Facebook e.g. !).
 In the project "Media Scouts“ students are trained
to media experts and presenters.
4 Parents
 The use of mobile phone and Internet by children
and young people is a major challenge for many
parents.
 Therefore, the schools can invite external
speakers and budgets for parents training are
provided.
5 Technical infrastructure
472 secondary schools (end of 2013), have been
equipped with technical infrastructure (Laptop Cart,
interactive whiteboards, tablets) and as needed with
a standard network (MNS+ or skolelinux).
6 Education Server
 The Education Server Rhineland-Palatinate
(http://bildung-rp.de ) is enhanced by e-learning and
communication platforms and digital learning.
 Registration for training of teachers is done online
(https://tis.bildung-rp.de) .
7 High quality educational
software
 The funded schools are equipped with a standard
set of multimedia packages for teaching.
 Selected open-source software is available for all.
8 Broadband connectivity
 The broadband connectivity of schools is based
primarily on the free provision of connection by
T@school (16 000 kbit / s).
 Measures to improve the accessibility of schools
are in preparation.
9 Partners and joint projects
 Many partners were found for participation.
 In addition to facilities of the Land several
companies in the media industry (Intel, Microsoft)
and broadcasters (SWR) and local newspapers
support the 10-point program.
10 State Pedagogical Institute
and Media Competence Networks
 The department „Media Literacy in Schools" in the
State Pedagogical Institute, is a central point of
contact to the actions of the 10-point program.
 The regional media competence networks carry the
offers in the area.

Medien Kompetenz Macht Schule

Media Literacy  It is the aim of our government that all of the secondary schools get modern hard- and software (2011-2016) .  It was a great success, because in our days 70 % of the schools have already got the necessary equipment.  1 Mio € (1,4 Mio $) are planned for the project in 2013.

Media Literacy  The information, the knowledge and the education concerning media gets more and more important for our society in the future.  The new media gives us many possibilities, but there are also many risks.  Considering that many people use the new media and the Internet, we must definitely find a way to protect our children.
  • 5. Media Literacy for our schools  Because of the technological changes in our politics concerning our youth, the job market, the society and the education, it is crucial to support the media competence of our students.  That‘s the reason why our government developed the program called „Medienkompetenz macht Schule“ (Media Literacy for our schools) with 10 different aspects:

  • 7. 1 The quality of our lessons  Due to the digital media we have the chance to make our students organize themselves, to give them the possibility to learn according to their individual needs and also to improve their social learning.  The role of e-learning, information, communication and learning together in the Internet will get more and more important in all of the subjects at school.
  • 8. 2 Teacher training and in-service training The teachers involved in Rhineland-Palatinate are trained in multiple related cooperation:  MOODLE (www.lernenonline.bildung-rp.de)  iMedia: (http://imedia.bildung-rp.de) Workshops & Presentations  SWR: School television (http://www.planet-schule.de)  etc.
  • 9. 3 Youth media protection  Teachers are qualified to “youth media protection advisers“ at their school and also deal with issues of a modern data protection (Facebook e.g. !).  In the project "Media Scouts“ students are trained to media experts and presenters.
  • 10. 4 Parents  The use of mobile phone and Internet by children and young people is a major challenge for many parents.  Therefore, the schools can invite external speakers and budgets for parents training are provided.
  • 11. 5 Technical infrastructure 472 secondary schools (end of 2013), have been equipped with technical infrastructure (Laptop Cart, interactive whiteboards, tablets) and as needed with a standard network (MNS+ or skolelinux).
  • 12. 6 Education Server  The Education Server Rhineland-Palatinate (http://bildung-rp.de ) is enhanced by e-learning and communication platforms and digital learning.  Registration for training of teachers is done online (https://tis.bildung-rp.de) .
  • 13. 7 High quality educational software  The funded schools are equipped with a standard set of multimedia packages for teaching.  Selected open-source software is available for all.
  • 14. 8 Broadband connectivity  The broadband connectivity of schools is based primarily on the free provision of connection by T@school (16 000 kbit / s).  Measures to improve the accessibility of schools are in preparation.
  • 15. 9 Partners and joint projects  Many partners were found for participation.  In addition to facilities of the Land several companies in the media industry (Intel, Microsoft) and broadcasters (SWR) and local newspapers support the 10-point program.
  • 16. 10 State Pedagogical Institute and Media Competence Networks  The department „Media Literacy in Schools" in the State Pedagogical Institute, is a central point of contact to the actions of the 10-point program.  The regional media competence networks carry the offers in the area.

Die Landesregierung hat mit dem 10-Punkte-Programm „Medienkompetenz macht Schule“ für die nächsten Jahre ein richtungweisendes Konzept auf den Weg gebracht, das die Schulen auf ihrem Weg bei der Förderung umfassender Medienkompetenz nachhaltig unterstützen wird. Für die Zukunftsfähigkeit der Gesellschaft spielen Information, Wissen und Bildung eine immer bedeutendere Rolle. Die neuen Medien bieten jedoch nicht nur Chancen, sondern auch Risiken. Angesichts der sich ausweitenden Nutzung der neuen Medien und des Internets gewinnen die Fragen eines effektiven Schutzes von Kindern und Heranwachsenden zunehmend an Bedeutung. Aufgrund der technologischen, jugend-, arbeitsmarkt-, gesellschafts- und bildungspolitischen Veränderungen kommt der Förderung von Medienkompetenz eine entscheidende Bedeutung zu. Bedenkt man, wie rasch sich Handy und Internet in allen Bereichen der Gesellschaft ausgebreitet haben, so ist Medienkompetenz die entscheidende Grundlage lebenslangen Lernens.
