This document provides an introduction to Medical Jurisprudence, its scope and application. It discusses how Medical Jurisprudence involves applying medical knowledge to legal purposes in both civil and criminal cases. Medical practitioners must provide evidence in court as expert witnesses to help determine innocence/guilt or verify criminal charges. They are responsible for carefully documenting all facts and drawing logical conclusions. The scope of Medical Jurisprudence requires a fair knowledge of medical and ancillary sciences. While theoretical teaching is stressed, practical application is neglected. Students need opportunities to examine injury/poisoning cases and witness autopsies. To address shortcomings, an overview of legal procedures and criminal courts is needed before covering the subject material.
