The document discusses researching the social groups that listen to hip hop/R&B music by looking at Twitter and Tumblr to understand their interests. It was found that they have a strong interest in personal appearance, fashion, and song lyrics about money, fame and relationships. To appeal to this target audience, the magazine featured topics related to these interests. It also used a model on the cover with a style similar to the target social groups to attract their attention.
2. After picking the genre Hip Hop/R&B for my
music magazine, I knew the best place for me to
have an understanding of the particular social
groups that listen to this genre would be on the
internet on social sites such as ‘Twitter’ and
‘Tumblr’ and looked at different people linking
me to other people who have mutual interests.
3. I found that they had a large interest in personal appearance and
fashion and like to reflect on lyrics from the songs that tend to
be associated with money, fame and relationships. In order for
my magazine to appeal to this social group, I had to associate
these topics within my magazine. According to Branston and
Stafford’s Representation and Stereotypes Theory (2010)
“stereotypes often try to insist on absolute difference and
boundaries (‘us’ and ‘them’)” and for me to stick to this theory I
considered that people from the relevant social group have a
certain style which is adaptions and twists on mainstream
fashion, so my magazine represented a particular style group,
the main element that showed this was the style of my model
being alike to the style of my target audience and relevant social
groups. And I made sure this was obvious directly on the front
cover, so that they were automatically attracted to it.
