This document summarizes a study on treating medial patellar luxation (MPL) without femoral trochlear groove deepening. The study involved 91 dogs with grades 1-4 MPL who underwent surgery without groove deepening and were followed up after 8 weeks. The results found that 11% had lameness, 6.6% required additional surgery for complications, and 19.8% experienced recurrent luxation. The study concluded that surgical correction without groove deepening produced similar outcomes to other studies, so the procedure is not always necessary for MPL treatment.

3. THE STUDY
 ”Is femoral trochlear groove deepening needed to
treat medial patellar luxation?”
 Surgery and 8-week follow up time
 Retrospective study conducted by veterinarians at
Norwood Park Animal Hospital in Norridge
 Goal:
 To evaluate MPL cases that were treated
identically, without femoral trochlear groove deepening

4. PATIENTS
 91 dogs
 63,7% were female
 Ages of dogs ranged from 1 to 13 years
 Weight range was 1,7 to 52,7 kg
 The grade of luxation was
 1 for 1,4% of dogs
 2 for 24,3% of dogs
 3 for 68,9% of dogs
 4 for 5,4% of dogs

5. MEDIAL PATELLAR LUXATION (MPL)
 A condition in which the patella no longer glides in
its natural groove in the femur
 May be congenital or acquired
 Congenital MPL is most commonly found in small dogs
 Luxations are divided in 4 grades from 1 to 4
 1- The patella is positioned normally but can be luxated
with slight manual pressure.
 2 - Spontaneous luxation occurs; however, it can
reduces spontaneously or can be replaced manually.
 3 - The patella is luxated most of the time; however it
can be replaced manually.
 4 - The patella cannot be reduced manually.

6. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TREADING MPL
 In low grade MPL:
 Restricted exercise and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
medication
 MPL which need surgery:
 a combination of soft tissue reconstruction, femoral
trochlear groove deepening and lateral transposition of
the tibial crest

7. RESULTS AFTER 8-WEEK FOLLOW UP TIME
 11% of the dogs had at least occasional lameness
 6,6% of the patients had major complications
requiring additional surgery
 34,1% of the dogs had minor complications
 19.8% dogs had recurrent patellar luxation following
the surgery
 23.1% of the dogs remained at least intermittently
lame after the perioperative and initial recovery
period or became lame again after initially
recovering.

8. OUTCOMES
 The study shows that surgical correction without a
troclear groove deepening procedure produces
similar outcomes to those reported in other studies
 Trochlear groove deepening for correction of MPL
should not be eliminated but doctors should think if
the procedure is really needed
