This study compared the postoperative analgesic effects of electroacupuncture, morphine, and sham acupuncture in dogs undergoing mastectomy. Thirty dogs were divided into three treatment groups. The results showed that the group receiving electroacupuncture required the least amount of rescue analgesia after surgery compared to the morphine and sham acupuncture groups. The study concluded that electroacupuncture reduces postoperative analgesic requirements and provides effective pain relief in dogs after mastectomy.

This research paper evaluated the effects of acupuncture at point Pericardium 6 (PC6) on nausea and vomiting induced by hydromorphone administration in healthy dogs. 81 dogs were randomly assigned to receive acupuncture at PC6, alternative acupuncture at Lung 5, or no acupuncture. After hydromorphone injection, dogs that received acupuncture at PC6 had a significantly lower incidence of vomiting compared to the other groups. Acupuncture at PC6 reduced vomiting in dogs but did not affect other signs of nausea like hypersalivation or licking. The study suggests acupuncture at PC6 can decrease opioid-induced vomiting in dogs during the perioperative period.

The analysis found that TENS reduced overall analgesic use by 26.5% compared to placebo. For trials using strong, subnoxious TENS at adequate frequencies, analgesic consumption was reduced by 35.5% compared to 4.1% for trials without these optimal parameters. The difference between optimal and non-optimal TENS was statistically significant, indicating TENS can significantly reduce pain medication needs when administered optimally.

The document summarizes an experiment evaluating the synergistic analgesic effect of combining an opioid (pethidine) and non-opioid (nimesulide) analgesic in mouse models of pain. The experiments found that the combination of pethidine and nimesulide produced significantly enhanced analgesic activity compared to either drug alone in tail flick, hot plate, and acetic acid induced writhing tests. This indicates the combination exhibits synergism in reducing pain. Future studies with more animals are needed to further understand the mechanism and potential therapeutic utility of such opioid-nonopioid combinations.

This research paper evaluated the effects of acupuncture at point Pericardium 6 (PC6) on nausea and vomiting induced by hydromorphone administration in healthy dogs. 81 dogs were randomly assigned to receive acupuncture at PC6, alternative acupuncture at Lung 5, or no acupuncture. After hydromorphone injection, dogs that received acupuncture at PC6 had a significantly lower incidence of vomiting compared to the other groups. Acupuncture at PC6 reduced vomiting in dogs but did not affect other signs of nausea like hypersalivation or licking. The study suggests acupuncture at PC6 can decrease opioid-induced vomiting in dogs during the perioperative period.

TENS can reduce postoperative analgesic consumption according to a meta-analysis of 21 randomized controlled trials. The analysis found that TENS reduced overall analgesic use by 26.5% compared to placebo. For trials using strong, subnoxious TENS at adequate frequencies, analgesic consumption was reduced by 35.5% compared to 4.1% for trials without these optimal parameters. The difference between optimal and non-optimal TENS was statistically significant, indicating TENS can significantly reduce pain medication needs when administered optimally.
