Camera
For our final product, we used a high-end camera. I am not
particularly knowledgeable about cameras, and so I
definitely learnt a lot during this process. I discovered
how important the lens was. During different shots, we
used different lenses, and the difference they made was
clear. The longer lens was used in long shots, and was
able to show detail that the standard lens could not. This
was something I felt drastically improved from our
preliminary; the quality of shots. It made our film look
much more professional.
Blogger
Before beginning AS Media Studies, I had little
experience with Blogger, and blogging in general.
However, I have reached a point where I am
completely comfortable with using the site. I started
without being able to upload a picture, yet I now
regularly include pictures and videos in my posts. I
am sure this will become an invaluable tool next
year.
iMovie
I had already worked with iMovie before AS Movie,
but I had not really used it extensively. This year I
used it in multiple different ways. After finishing our
storyboards, we had to produce an animatic so
that we had a rough idea of how our film would be.
I didn’t realise how useful this was, and we often
referred back to the storyboards when filming. Just
having some form of cutting between shots helped
massively.
Screenplay/Google Docs
Being the writer for our film, it was important that
I got to grips with writing a screenplay. This is
much like a script, but it also details the
camera shots used. It was extremely useful for
us when filming because it meant that, as
long as we stuck to the screenplay, the film
would be exactly how we wanted it. The tool I
used for this was google docs. Other users
had uploaded screenplay templates to give
you a general idea of the strict rules you must
adhere to when writing one. I think writing the
screenplay was my most enjoyable
experience.
What have I learnt?
I have learnt many things about the technology
involved in producing a film. For one, I learnt how
important the editing is. Without proper editing,
the shots wouldn’t make sense. This is where I feel
we fell down on the preliminary. On top of a non-
existent narrative, there were some shots, like the
close-up of the water bottle that didn’t make
sense. However, I feel we have corrected this in
the final product, and am extremely pleased with
the work we have produced. In the future, I hope
to play a bigger role in the editing process. I feel
there is always much more to learn, and I am
happy to do so.
