This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. I will be carrying out a variety of different tasks throughout this study, which will be shown throughout this presentation using the
different facilities available to me and with the appropriate feedback throughout which will entitle me to achieve my overall goals. I
have been asked as my main task to create a school magazine of my own after first evaluating and examining a selection of various
other school magazines of mixed levels of success within them. By evaluating the contents within a number of other school
magazines first will be the perfect requirement for myself to then be able to go on and create my own to the best ability and work on
any of the faults that I found from the others.
The intentions as I go on throughout this study is to be able to create a product which needs little correction due to my own
improvements made throughout and is to the best of my ability, fitting the aim to be suitable for schools. This magazine will be a
reflection of what I think a successful school magazine should be centred about.
3. The name of the magazine is
large and made to be seen by
the use of capital letters and
the yellow font amongst the
black background.
The logo for the
school is placed
at the top corner
and is the
representation
for the school.
Image is in the centre of the
magazine and draws
attention to the article.
Also the use of an image will
interest the reader.
Task 1
Including quoted speech
from one of the players
makes the magazine a
more emotive read as
you really gather a feel of
being a part of the
players success.
The black background
makes everything on the
magazine stand out and
become more clear and
due to the white writing it
is an easy read.
The mug shot
image captures
the thrill of the
players and gives
the underlining
message of the
magazine.
4. FRONT COVER ANALAYSIS:
• The magazines front cover is black which makes everything stand out which is important because the schools logo colour
being yellow the black really emphasises this and the schools logo needs to be stood out so that the readers of the magazine
know and appreciate what school to which it belongs to.
• There is a large image placed in the middle of the magazine which shows the success of the football team with the player
holding the trophy being in the middle and eye centre.
• Parents of players on the team are likely to read this magazine as it is likely there children are on the team and will want to
understand and be involved with the success of the team. Also the magazine could be aimed at the boys of the school due
to the choice of dark colours, girls may not feel interested at first glance of the front cover.
• The magazine is extremely positive and highlights the success of the school and the many quotes throughout from different
individuals that express how proud they are of the players.
EVALUTION :
SUCCESSES
. The magazine uses white writing which stands
out on the black background and is easy to read.
. The use of a mug shot image capturing the
natural instincts the team had when they won.
. The school logo is up the top and it is evident to
readers what school it belongs.
. The font of the writing has been kept simple
and bold which makes it easy enough to read.
.
WEAKNESSES
. Due to the use of such colours being used
(the black background) the magazine appeals
more towards boys than to girls.
. People might be too drawn to the pictures
instead of the actual information that is written
in the article.
.The magazine does not appeal especially to
younger ages because of the dark colours.
5. The School name is in a large
white font at the top of the
magazine.
A rhetorical question is on the
front of the magazine which
engages the reader.
A large image at the front
which is relevant to what
the article is on.
Dark background and
overall the colours used
are dark and dull.
The date of the magazine
issue is at the top for the
reader to see when the
magazine has been
published.
6. FRONT COVER ANALYSIS:
• The Front cover of the magazine is not very bright which makes it less eye-catching as the colours that have been used on this
magazine are mainly dark blue which is not eye-catching.
• The name of the school is at the top of the magazine in a plain white font, the font being simple and easy to read is what makes
the magazine come across more appealing to an audience that will have an interest to read it.
• The magazine has little images which is less appealing to younger readers, from looking at the magazine cover you would
automatically assume that the magazine is aimed at an older reader; a parent/carer perhaps.
• There is no indication on the front page as to what the magazine will include predominantly which some audience might not find
beneficial as they do not know what to expect.
• Dark colours and lack of pictures indicate that the school is of a high standard because we could infer that if the front cover was
plastered with random pictures and colourful child like font that it is a more un formal school setting.
SUCCESSES
.The front cover makes the school name clear
enough to stand out and be seen from the rest of
the magazine; therefore making their magazine
known.
• The use of a rhetorical question which will
intrigue the reader to want to read the
magazine as the rhetorical question makes
them feel a part of the magazine and involved.
• The front cover is not messy and is laid out
neat and tidy, not an eyesore.
• Text does not cover the image which could
make it look messy and ruin the purpose of
the image.
WEAKNESSES
• The magazine is extremely dark which might
not attract buyers of the magazine therefore
not enough readers.
• The magazine looks more appealing to older
audiences which is not very useful considering
the magazine is meant to be representing a
school and should be appealing to them.

8. • This magazine has been a success in many ways going from the production of both its front cover and context pages which
are both quality and high standard representations of this school. The front cover has a large title which sits in a slanted
position at the top of the entire magazine, the title being positioned at the top and in the centre of this magazine makes it
easy for the public to be able to decipher what this editions article will be revolved about and to weather or not they will be
Interested in reading. On the left side of the front cover has been situated the main story and the secondary stories which
are clearly laid out and do not interrupt or cover the main background image of the magazine which would ruin the purpose
of the large background image and may cause it to look messy. The background image which we can only infer is of a sixth
form student that has achieved his a level results (stated in the main story), this image is a clear medium shot that lets you
see a personal enough picture of the student without it being too personal. The details such as the magazine issue
number/date etc. has been put at the bottom right of the magazine which is necessary because it does not need to be made
centre attention as it is just an extra feature to let readers know extra information on the magazine. The context page also
includes images which gives you extra incite to what will be in the magazine further on also the context page includes what
is expected to be found further on as you continue to read. Both the context and front page have been made using little
colour which gives a professional and formal vibe off because if too much colour was used then this might cause it to seem
messy and child like; when in fact we know that the magazine is aimed at sixth form news relation.
• Both the cover and the context could be improved by including some colour which will help make the magazine more
colourful because some might find the magazine boring and dull and it also represents sixth form to be boring and only
attended by the intellectual students when this is not entirely the case at all.
• The magazine so far seems to fill the brief as most criteria required for a successful cover and contents page has been filled
and I feel confident in being able to produce something of a similar quality for my own magazine; which should be
appropriate for this task that I have been given. To achieve this criteria I will need to use the many facilities such as
Photoshop and other facilities on the computer to create a well set out magazine and also by gathering and using the
feedback from the appropriate audience set for my magazine will allow me to make it the best it can possibly be.
