AS Media Studies Preliminary Task – School Magazine Front Page Proposal Form
Target audience:
(age range, interests)
Although it is a school newsletter you still have to think about your
audience and how to appeal to them.
People that are in the school ranging from ages between 11-18. The range of ages in a school are quite large so the media would have to include things relevant and
appealing to all. KS3 (ages 11-14) have different interests to older students and therefore would perhaps be more interested in curtain subject that they may start to think
about taking in KS4 and they may also be more enthusiastic to take part in charity and volunteer events as they have no exams to be working for at the end of the year. Ks4
would probably be interested in places they can go or things they can do to broaden their knowledge, take their learning further and revise for exams. Also it might be a
good idea to get them thinking about post year 11. KS5 would like to know about UCAS and promotion of universities would be interesting to them and relevant to the
situation and age they are categorised in. Also for all students fun and healthy activities and ideas should be promoted.
Possible title ideas:
(masthead / title block)
What is your magazine going to be called?
The school is called The Priory School, Simple ideas: The priory, Priory, Priory School, Priory Magazine, Priory Talk, Hello priory, Read Priory, Priory on Pages
Developed ideas, Priority, News on Priory, Priory Times, Priory Press, Promote Priory.
The name would have to be relevant to a school and appropriate tot the audience also most institution like titles that promote the company such as Nisa, Burger King and
Real Ale. Words in those title are positive giving an instant advertisement.
Main image:
What will be the focal point of your front page, remember, your work
“must include a photograph of a student in a medium close-up”
Photograph of the main event that has happened recently, photo of the school, photo of a member of staff, photo of head boy or head girl, phot of student, photo of
student, playing sport, playing games, studying or laughing to reflect positive things about the school.
Main cover line:
What will be the main story?
Results of A-level students, GCSE results. Results of sporting events in the local area with the school involved. Charity events that need promotion.
A-level students Ace there grades, GCSE results best in 4 years, the priory school winning 11-0 to Hitchin boys school at football. Cake sale hoping to beat cancer.
Additional key images:
What other images will be on your front cover?
Remember, it is a school magazine.
Head shots of students or teaching staff. Logos of companies that promote good things for the school such as Sainsbury's and WHSmith.
Additional cover lines:
Other features, stories or selling points which will be inside the
magazine, these need to be audience appropriate.
Interesting ides for success for the school, key events happening, what the magazine includes and anything else that’s not included as a main headline.
Typography:
(style, size, colour of copy)
Think about the writing and the style of the writing on your front page.
Calibri or Myriad Pro will be used for small print. Large texts and sub-headlines will vary depending on the topic of the media. The colour will also depend on the
photograph used in the background and which colours contrast the best.
Background colour/image:
What will be in the background, remember you don’t want to take the
focus away from the main image.
My main image will most likely be my background as I do not what the front cover to look to busty as if it looks busty on the front people will see it and not have the
patience to even open it and see they key information inside.
Technical considerations:
(equipment, setting, props, costume, lighting)
Be realistic and creative, think about what you have access to and how
you could use it.
Professional camera would be required, Photoshop, illustrator and other software would also be useful to create a successful magazine front cover. The lighting will not be
a problem as long as there is a clear light or the photo is taken outside things will run smoothly. Costumes will be strictly uniform or PE kit to promote the school.
Preliminary exercise: produce a front page and contents page of a school magazine. Front covers must include a
photograph of a student in a medium close-up with appropriately laid out text and use of an image manipulation
programme (Photoshop).
Below start to sketch what the front cover of your newsletter will look like.

Why I chose main
image?
I chose the middle image above as my main image for the front of my
magazine because I thought that it was the most appealing to my target
audience a gave out the most positive feel to the user. It was a hard decision
as the other two images contain the colour red which is bright and stands
out on a shelf and is also the main colour of the school logo but I found that
middle image was the most appropriate for lighting angle and fitting for the
magazine theme.
How I changed one image?
I edited the photography of madeleine by cropping out the background and
adjusting the brightness and contrast in Photoshop and I cut half of her
body out to make the picture seem less flat when on the front cover of the
magazine.
What I have learnt?
I have learnt by completing this task what types of things to include in a magazine.
What my target audience are looking for and taking that information and designing
to fit a target audience specification. I have developed my skills in Photoshop and I
have been able to identify what people want to see, hear about and read in local
media. I have also learnt that taking photos is more difficult that I originally
thought and I now have a broader experience on how to take and edit a good
image. This task has prepared me for my coursework and I am pleased with the
results.
