MY PITCH.
“ You have been commissioned by the northern
echo to produce a new magazine or newspaper
product. Your product could be in any style or
genre but it must be self financed through sales
or advertising. You must also product your
magazine for a specified audience segment
within the 16-25 age group.
”
HOW I WILL MEET THIS BRIEF
To successfully meet my brief I have:
• Created a magazine to appeal to a C2DE
audience in order to try and reach out to a
younger audience and expand the current range
of readers The Northern Echo have.
• Created a budget magazine so that it won’t set
back The Northern Echo financially, or the
readers for that matter, using up and coming
journalists to promote youth working.
• Created a magazine of the ‘Skate’, as well as the
‘Youth Culture’ genre, targeting people ages 16-
24 to unlock different lifestyles to young
people.
• Chosen a magazine which is commercially
viable and exploits a gap in the market for it’s
genre.
• Created a magazine that is self financed using
sales and charging for advertising inside.
WHY SKATING
• I have skated for a number of
years
• benefits of the lifestyle
• I am passionate about skating
as a culture
• I can understand the
misconceptions of
skateboarding
• gap in the market in
• Encourage interaction
AUDIENCE PROFILE
• The tribes that would fit into my
audience profile would be
somewhat of a combination of
skaters, young alternatives,
creatives and urban artists.
• My audience age range would be
16-24 and hold a mixed, but
predominantly male audience.
• C2DE socioeconomic status
• The education status of my
audience will range from a high
school diploma level to a university
degree level.
• Usually low income, if any at all,
with lots of students living off
student finance.
• Buying behaviors of other
magazine’s include music
magazines such as NME or Rolling
Stone, average spending:
£0 - £2.50 (approximately)
FACTORS FOR CONSIDERATION /
Secondary Audience:
My Secondary audience includes people around my primary audience and
The Northern Echo readrers.
• Parents, brothers, sisters, friends, as well as other skateboarders and
generally creative people
• To keep my secondary audience satisfied, I must:
- Have no nudity
- Have no inappropriate or negatively influential content.
- Create articles which are appreciated, respected and understood by the
skateboarding community as the focus of the magazine is about their
culture.
- Try to minimalize the amount of taboo language I use.
FACTORS FOR CONSIDERATION //
Constraints – The IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organization)
The IPSO carries out regulation of magazine publications in the aim to
protect the welfare of the public. The Editors’ codes of practice has 16
categories of rules labeled as ‘clauses’ which if breeched result in an
appropriate punishment.
I need to ensure that I do not breech any of these clauses and approach
the possibility of encountering them in an appropriate way.

I will always seek request conformation from models & parents or guardians
of the models if the age of them were to come into play before photographing
them.
I will obtain permission from the holder of information that I gather to use to
ensure I do not encounter any copyright infringements .
I will carry out my interviews auditorily, record them, then create a transcript
of the interview to guarantee accuracy in my articles.
All images will be taken by myself without using sources such as the
internet in order to protect myself against copyright infringement.
I will make sure that I check with the individual(s) with which my story
concerns that my content is okay to publish with them before I do so.

Image heavy.
HOW WILL I IMPLEMENT THIS
I will make sure that I follow guidelines that I set myself based on what my
target audience like in a magazine which I know from audience research.
I aim to:
• Use a diverse range of imagery and image effects, making sure that my
articles are either a 50:50 ratio between images and text, or image heavy.
• Use a mix of active and passive imagery, contrasting between the effects I
use to make my images appear the way I want them too.
• Use a combination of Sans-Serif and Serif fonts to achieve the design I
want too, as well as using a variation of colloquial, taboo, and emotive
language in my articles.
• Use young models of either sex in order to keep my audience broad in the
niche I have selected.
• Have a minimalistic layout for my magazine cover to place focus on the
imagery rather than to overelaborate on the content of the magazine.

Acul t SceneWhydidyoustart skateboarding?
I rst got askateboard when I wasreally young,
maybeabout 5yearsold, becauseI thought it looked
cool but at that ageI didn’t havetheattention span to
commit to anythingso I only started properly skating
when I turned 12or 13and I wasphysically capable
of controllingtheboard. I think thereason I actually
started skatingwasmainly becauseI thought it was
cool to behonest ahah.
Howhasskateboardingchangedyouasaperson?
SinceI started skateboardingI havede nitely looked

soundsmajor mawkish but it’strue.

I spent afew months-half ayear just skatingby

Howhasskateboardinga ectedyour mental health?
Skateboardingin thetruest senseisan escape. When
you step out thedoor and push down thestreet
nothingmattersother than whereyou’regoingand
how you get there. When your brain isfeelingspan-
gled for onereason or another, for mepersonally, the
best way to gain asenseof groundednessisto go for
askate. I’m not sureexactly why thisisbut it’ssome-
thingto do with nostalgiaand thesenseof progres-
sion. When I skateI don’t strivefor achievement, it’s
not aparticular goal I’m lookingfor but asenseof
progression. eonly negativeway I can think that
skatinghasanegativeimpact on mental health isthe
frustration of not beingableto do something, but
in away I feel it’sagood thingto get abit mad and
freak out every now and
then. In general I’m not a
competitiveperson in the
slightest, which I think
can bepositivebecauseit
meansI don’t beat myself
up about thingsand I don’t nd myself
beingjealousofsomeoneelse’sachievements,
but it also meansI haveahard time ndingmoti-
vation but when I skatetheonly motivation I need
isthat senseof progression and that’swhat I think
about when ndingmotivation in all aspectsof life.

• Nicely spread out
paragraphs and lengths
• Good use of colour to
highlight different
questions in an interview
article
• Nice use of different fonts
to differ from questions
and answers.
• Could use more colour on
the page.• Could use more active
imagery
MOCK UP PROCESS
Mock up 2 with quotes
• Good structure, having a
dominant image.
• Nice, evenly spaced
paragraphs
• Nice use of space having
text in the corners to
illustrate details of article.
• Good use of effects blurring
the skateboarders in the
image to show the pace of
movement.
• Good use of emotive
language in article.
• Could use more effects on
image to make it more
aesthetically pleasing.
• Could use more colour
HOW I WILL APPLY THESE COMMENTS
I will deeply consider the comments made by my peers in order to see what
they like about my mock up magazines as well as what they think could be
improved.
• Ensure I include enough colour to make the magazine look nicer to the
eye
• Include lots of imagery to illustrate what the article is talking about
whether it’s passive or active imagery.
• Use effects on my images to make them more appealing
• Make sure there is enough text in my articles so that the reader is
consistently entertained by my images as well as the text.

BRANDING
I will do certain things to brand my magazine so that
it is noticeable from a glance, as well as to keep a
consistent theme that my audience will appreicate
reading regularly.
• I will construct creative layouts of my articles in terms of their layout,
• I will make my articles image heavy in terms of image:text ratio
• I will make sure that my colour use is dynamic and not too consistent, using a
range of colours to show the different feeling s I am aiming to portray in my
articles
• I will use a combinations of Serif and Sans Serif fonts to highlight the creative
nature of my magazine
• I will consistently use the same masthead of my magazine the same on all issues
I produce.
• I will use both active and passive imagery throughout my magazine, and keep the
front cover minimalistic in terms of text to put the focus on the imagery of my
magazine

  • 12. HOW WILL I IMPLEMENT THIS I will make sure that I follow guidelines that I set myself based on what my target audience like in a magazine which I know from audience research. I aim to: • Use a diverse range of imagery and image effects, making sure that my articles are either a 50:50 ratio between images and text, or image heavy. • Use a mix of active and passive imagery, contrasting between the effects I use to make my images appear the way I want them too. • Use a combination of Sans-Serif and Serif fonts to achieve the design I want too, as well as using a variation of colloquial, taboo, and emotive language in my articles. • Use young models of either sex in order to keep my audience broad in the niche I have selected. • Have a minimalistic layout for my magazine cover to place focus on the imagery rather than to overelaborate on the content of the magazine.
