Richard Berry
Sue Perryman
Sunderland Technical College was established as a municipal training college in 1901. It gained
university status in 1992. It now has campuses in Sunderland, London and Hong Kong. On the 26th
April 2012 the university announced they would be opening their campus in London, and on the
2nd
March 2017 they announced they would be opening a new campus in Hong Kong. The
University's £9m state-of-the-art Media Centre, launched in 2004, is near St Peter's Church,
Monkwearmouth. In this experience we took part in a media taster day where we were able to
record our own radio episode that was then broadcasted across the radio station, Spark Radio.
We were able to change songs, control the volume and see some scripts that the radio presenters
use. When seeing the scripts, we were allowed to change the script to fit to our event. Spark radio
is a radio station that is ran from Sunderland University and is presented by volunteers/ students
who want to have a segment on the radio station. We also took part in a live TV workshop where
we were able to learn different camera angles and take part in being different roles while
shooting the TV show. These roles were such as floor manager, sound control, swapping the
camera angles, camera operator and script operator.
From this experience I learned the many different roles on live TV and how the crew works
together to make the show run smoothly. I also learned how to control live radio and how
presenters cater their shows to their audience. This allowed me to explore different areas of the
industry and by doing this it allowed me to see that I am interested in live radio. From this
experience allowed me to see the facilities that Is available at the University, I also learned that
any one can volunteer to present on the radio and they don’t have to be a student at the
university. This also allowed me to meet Richard Berry and Sue Pearlman who are lecturers at the
University and have professional industry experience. I have learned new skills with live radio and
live TV and how to control different elements of the industry.
Remember, all networking experiences/trips will be different, so there is no one way to answer
this.
