1. Networking Experience
On Wednesday 19th
April 2023, I went to a Media festival at Teesside University. I learnt about the
different equipment used in a film studio for TV and film sets. There was two different camera that
either had the script on what the actors and presenters would say. There was also a camera that
would film the presenters or actors and would be able to show up on screen to see if they are in shot
and if the way the camera is angled is correct. I also learned that there are loads of different lights,
controls that go into filming.
There was a journalist who talked to use about the different qualifications he needed to become a
journalist. He mentioned some of the different stories he had worked on and how he must get
information as soon as possible after the incident such as asking people in the area, who was
involved (if they are in a good condition to talk). He mentioned that some people might not want to
talk, and he had to respect that.
I have learnt about potential career paths because in a film studio you could be in the control room
controlling the different lighting, effects and transitions that would appear on screen. Meanwhile in
the studio you could be directing the actors and presents, controlling the different camera
equipment, making sure everything is correct and if not fixing it to make it look good on screen.
For the journalist side I have learnt that following the news would be important as you could be
drafting a story on one of many and it must be factual, reliable, and engaging.
On 24th
November 2023, Creo comms at Sunderland Bede College, I learnt about graphic designers,
illustrators and their overall business. They have collaborated with different media companies in
England and overseas, which was very beneficial for their brand and personal growth.
I found out more about the business and how they play a role in the industry. I have learnt that
going to university is where they will consider people from, but they did say there was other ways,
but University is preferred.

2. In addition, I have learnt as I could work with them if I do go to university and want to be part of
their team. I have learnt that connections are important and how having good people behind you is
useful within the media industry.
Furthermore, I did BBC Apprenticeship talk and BBC writers' room at Sunderland Bede college on
the 17th September 2022. This was all about the different types of apprenticeships you can get with
the BBC. They taught us how we can apply and how to find the correct apprentice with the BBC that
fits right with you.
Their history with BBC is that they work for the BBC and to encourage young people who are doing
media to apply for an apprentice.

3. I learned that there are loads of different jobs that I could potentially get from working with the
BBC, examples of this would be journalism, News reader and potentially a presenter. These
apprentices opened me up to the different career paths I could go down after college.
I found out more about BBC as a company as there is loads of different apprentices you could get
which would also be linked to different BBC shows on different channels.
This helped me with thinking about different careers as there is lots to choose from, I could join the
BBC and even work on channels and shows which is a possibility.
This apprentice job can make you work with people who also want the same type of career and can
help each other get the careers you both want. This can also help with knowing exactly what I want
to achieve with working in the BBC.
Furthermore, I had a BBC apprenticeship talk on the 25th April 2023 at Sunderland College. She is
an apprentice with BBC and is working in production and controls sound, lighting and many more
production equipment.

4. She is going to university and doing loads of different experiences such as becoming an extra in a
show that’s not aired yet, helping with Children in need and going to loads of different places in the
country such as Liverpool and Birmingham to learn different skills that can help with the
apprenticeship and in the future.
In addition, there was a Sunderland University talk on the 13th and 14th June.
Richard Bowery and Caroline Finnon, Caroline is a student recruitment officer from Sunderland
University. Richard Bowery is a lecture at Sunderland University, and he specialises in film and
media. I learnt about Sunderland university overall and what they offer. I learnt about student
finance and all the different methods for that support. I learnt about student union and the different
help the university can offer for study support. I learnt about the different media courses they offer
and what jobs I could get from studying them.

5. Furthermore, there was a Guardian workshop for Behind the headline on the 27th of February 2023. It
was with Jane who works with the Guardian news. The guardian is a news report website, and they
produce physical copies such as newspaper. Jane has been doing this job for a while and she focus
on journalism.
Digifin workshop on the 6th February 2023 at Bede Sunderland College by Lee Axin who owns the
company. Lee told us about how he started his career just by filming on a iPhone 11. He films
weddings, car promotional videos and any content. He uses cameras, drones and Premiere pro to
create his work.
At first, he went to different places such as Restaurants, fish and chip shops to ask them if he could
film videos free of charge. He eventually went into Aston Martin and asked if he could do the same.
Now he has his own busy filming a variety of content for big name companies and ordinary people
who ask for his service.
He has been doing his business for a while after many careers. After using an iPhone 11 for 2 years
he progressed to a camera and then a drone and has been creating amazing content since then.

6. I have learned that you don’t need fancy equipment to create something amazing through
videography and photography. Also, if want to do something in life you should go and do it as you
will never know if you can create something amazing without trying. Also, confidence and belief is
what he used to video for big companies and if you believe that you can do it than it will happen.
I have realised that there are many different opportunities in media, and it does not mean that that
you must work with a company. You can also be self-employed and either work by yourself or
employ others. Either way you can work with different companies and create content that can fit
their brand.
I have realised that trial and error can be good in projects for media, as using different techniques,
editing and shooting styles can improve a video so much more.
Zara Mcdermott came in to discuss Disorder eating as a BBC documentary at Sunderland Bede
college on Thursday 17th November 2022. Zara Mcdermott talked about her own personal issues
with an eating disorder, and there were people from the production team of the documentary and
production of other BBC shows.
Zara Mcdermott is a social media influencer who appeared on the reality TV show Love Island in
June 2018 for their fourth series. After Love Island she started to struggle with her weight and diet.
From this she developed an eating disorder and has been getting better and getting the help she
needs.

7. Vibe magazine presentation was on the 12th of December 2022 at Sunderland Bede College. Vibe
magazines are a company that do magazines on news, music, movies, TV shows and lifestyle. They
have been around since 1993 and they have been doing magazines about the Northeast. These could
be news about different tourist spots and national events. We learnt that for their next magazine it
is all to do with sports within the Northeast of England. I have learnt that Vibe needs more editors
as there was only one who does it all and he said that it would be nice if he had someone to help
him and experience the same feeling of piecing art together. This talk made me realise that people
in the print industry will also need editors. I have realised that there would be a lot of opportunities
that I could get from working with Vibe as they could let me have a say in what type of magazine we
should publish next. This company had made me realise that I will have to make my work really
stand out and make it unique. What I have learnt is that even with pictures you can get your
message across.
