1. Personal Statement
My studies in media at college for the past two years have given me a great desire to pursue this as a
career. During the past 2 years, I have learnt a variety of new skills within media. I have learnt how
to use a camera and how to get the best shots and angles. I have learnt how to use a range of
programmes for post production such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects
and Adobe Premiere. I have learnt how to use professional sound equipment and used it for a short
film. I have an interest in media because there are a lot of opportunities in that field and there are
so many incredible things create using media. The thing that interests me most in media is camera
work. When I did filming or taking still shots as part of my college work I enjoyed that more than any
other task we did. After university I would ideally like to work at the new Media City at Salford Quays
as I have visited the buildings a few times and I really enjoyed the visit and felt like I would enjoy
working there.
I did a lot of projects and tasks as part of college work that would help me in any projects in this
course. I did a lot of filming with a camera which I feel very comfortable with and find enjoyable. We
had to then edit what we had recorded on camera a lot using Adobe Premiere which I am also now
comfortable with. On the other side of media I had to a lot of work creating things on Adobe
Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, it took me a long time to work out how to use the programmes
properly but now know how to use it quite well. I learnt how to do pre-production work and realised
how important it was to our project. We went on various trips to the cinema to understand film
genres and what makes a good action film or horror film etc. We also went on trips to Salford Quays
and the woods to take some pictures with an SLR camera to get some good effects and good shots
for creating a music magazine cover.
During the summer holidays of 2011 I went to a course for a week called ‘Supporter to Reporter’.
This took place at Lancashire Cricket Club and I basically learnt the basic skills of media and what it
takes to become a successful reporter/journalist. Over a week we learnt various skills like
interviewing skills, camera skills, sound skills and editing skills. The first thing we had to was a
Voxpop. I chose to ask people of the local area who there sporting idol was. I then had to upload my
recordings on to the computer and edited through Audacity to make a professional sounding
Voxpop. At the end of the week we went an event called Manchester United Premier Cup. This was a
football tournament for the best academy teams in the world. We had to create a short film about
the tournament including highlights from various games and interviews with some of the players,
managers and fans. I really enjoyed the whole week and it is the main reason I have an interest in
media. In high school we had to organise a work experience placement for two weeks. I organised to
work with a PE teacher at SSCO. The two weeks consisted of visiting different primary schools and
help teaching PE lessons such as football and orienteering. These two weeks showed I have good
leadership skills.
My main interests are TV/Radio, Sports (mainly football) and music. I also like to go on my
PlayStation or go out with and socialise with my friends. I often go to Old Trafford to watch
Manchester United.
I am applying for this course because it is what I really want to do in the future and pursue a career
in and after researching the course I think I will enjoy it and do well in it.
