social groups?

Why is Audience important.
 Firstly, one must define what the audience means and its
importance to media forms.
 The term audience refers to people watching or listening to
broadcast: the viewers of a movie or a television program, or the
listeners to a radio program
 Audience is important to the media because the bigger the
audience the more they can charge for commercials. The charge
can be as much or even more than a million bucks a minute
depending on the number of viewers that are expected to be
watching.

Theory
Why is representation important
 Representation refers to the construction in a any medium
(especially for media forms) as aspects of 'reality, such as people
places objects evens and Social Groups/. Representation involves
not only how identities are represented (or constructed) within the
text but also how they are constructed in the process of production
and reception through the audience.
Different social groups -
C.A.G.E.R.D.S
 C-LASS
 A-GE
 G-ENDER
 R-EGIONAL IDENTITY
 D-ISBALITY
 S-EXUALITY
Features above in the acronym „CAGERDS‟ are the different types of
social groups that media forms represent.
CLASS
 I believe my media product was able to reprints the working class as
our protagonist reflects characteristics that fall under the working
class categories eg; living in an estate. Thus- other working class
individuals may seek to watch the media form.
Age
 My media product mainly represents students aged 16-21 who are
in higher education. This is because the narrative is based around
“university offers”. Therefore other students of similar age could seek
to watch the film as they ay relate to the similar experience
Gender
 Both male and females are represented within my media form
however differ between the stereotypical representations.
 Firstly the female is represented as very venerable as she is the
hopeless victim, a „damsel in distress‟ within the narrative.
 In contrast, the male character is seen as a friend who showcases
very affectionate and caring behaviour thus challenging the
stereotypical „macho‟ male who is usually played in Thriller movies.
Ethnicity
 Both Afro-Caribbean and Asian ethnicity's are presented within the
media form as the cast members can clearly can be identified to
come from that heritage and culture. However, the Africans
Caribbean's stereotypes are challenged, as rather then usually
being portrayed as deviant, our cast member is the victim.
 Similarly, I also challenged the stereotype of a typical „smart‟ Indian
boy as within my narrative, the Asian cast member has „failed at
university‟.
 Thus representing different types of ethnicity that is hardly featured
within media texts
Regional Identity
 As my media project is set and filmed in East End London, Hackney
there is a stereotypical portrayal of the individuals who are
represented there. For example, as Hackney has been portrayed as
negative and deviant the use of our protagonist being kidnapped
from someone in hackney represents Hackney civilians as immoral.
Although this is a bias representation, it does add to the theme of
realism, thus audiences may be attracted to the film as it dwells on
real life stereotypes.
Sexuality
 The sexuality of our cast is not specifically defined however one can
comment that the characterises of the protagonist friend as being
flamboyant and camp, thus possibly presenting characterises of
femininity and homosexuality as he is portrayed as the „gay beset
friend‟. However as it is not specified one can only imply. In turn this
can give a neutral representation of sexuality as the audience can
question the cast members.
Finally,
 Audience is key in order to ensure the success of any media
forms, thus there must be an acceptable representation. In turn this
gives our (cagerds) social groups a beacon of
representation, where they can find similarities and relate with the
audience to create a fan base and target audience.
 Overall, I believe that my media product does represent different
social groups by both challenging and developing the typical
stereotypes that are featured in todays mass media.

  • 1. How does your media product represent particular social groups? MOHAMMED IBRAHIM
  • 2. Why is Audience important.  Firstly, one must define what the audience means and its importance to media forms.  The term audience refers to people watching or listening to broadcast: the viewers of a movie or a television program, or the listeners to a radio program  Audience is important to the media because the bigger the audience the more they can charge for commercials. The charge can be as much or even more than a million bucks a minute depending on the number of viewers that are expected to be watching.

Why is representation important  Representation refers to the construction in a any medium (especially for media forms) as aspects of 'reality, such as people places objects evens and Social Groups/. Representation involves not only how identities are represented (or constructed) within the text but also how they are constructed in the process of production and reception through the audience.
  • 5. Different social groups - C.A.G.E.R.D.S  C-LASS  A-GE  G-ENDER  R-EGIONAL IDENTITY  D-ISBALITY  S-EXUALITY Features above in the acronym „CAGERDS‟ are the different types of social groups that media forms represent.
  • 6. CLASS  I believe my media product was able to reprints the working class as our protagonist reflects characteristics that fall under the working class categories eg; living in an estate. Thus- other working class individuals may seek to watch the media form.
  • 7. Age  My media product mainly represents students aged 16-21 who are in higher education. This is because the narrative is based around “university offers”. Therefore other students of similar age could seek to watch the film as they ay relate to the similar experience
  • 8. Gender  Both male and females are represented within my media form however differ between the stereotypical representations.  Firstly the female is represented as very venerable as she is the hopeless victim, a „damsel in distress‟ within the narrative.  In contrast, the male character is seen as a friend who showcases very affectionate and caring behaviour thus challenging the stereotypical „macho‟ male who is usually played in Thriller movies.
  • 9. Ethnicity  Both Afro-Caribbean and Asian ethnicity's are presented within the media form as the cast members can clearly can be identified to come from that heritage and culture. However, the Africans Caribbean's stereotypes are challenged, as rather then usually being portrayed as deviant, our cast member is the victim.  Similarly, I also challenged the stereotype of a typical „smart‟ Indian boy as within my narrative, the Asian cast member has „failed at university‟.  Thus representing different types of ethnicity that is hardly featured within media texts
  • 10. Regional Identity  As my media project is set and filmed in East End London, Hackney there is a stereotypical portrayal of the individuals who are represented there. For example, as Hackney has been portrayed as negative and deviant the use of our protagonist being kidnapped from someone in hackney represents Hackney civilians as immoral. Although this is a bias representation, it does add to the theme of realism, thus audiences may be attracted to the film as it dwells on real life stereotypes.
  • 11. Sexuality  The sexuality of our cast is not specifically defined however one can comment that the characterises of the protagonist friend as being flamboyant and camp, thus possibly presenting characterises of femininity and homosexuality as he is portrayed as the „gay beset friend‟. However as it is not specified one can only imply. In turn this can give a neutral representation of sexuality as the audience can question the cast members.
  • 12. Finally,  Audience is key in order to ensure the success of any media forms, thus there must be an acceptable representation. In turn this gives our (cagerds) social groups a beacon of representation, where they can find similarities and relate with the audience to create a fan base and target audience.  Overall, I believe that my media product does represent different social groups by both challenging and developing the typical stereotypes that are featured in todays mass media.
