How Did You Use
Conventions Of Real
Media Texts In Your
Production
AS to A2

For last years coursework I had to create a music
magazine that contained a double page spread, front
cover and contents page. The two main technologies
that I used when creating my music magazine were ‘In
design’ and ‘Photo shop’. Last year I had never used
photo shop or in design at all so I feel like my
coursework really suffered for it in that sense.
However this year my skills on photo shop are much
more visible as over the course of my A2’s I’ve had
sufficient time to learn how to use the program
properly.
Mise En Scene

In our coursework group we created a film in the horror category. We really tried to explore
and diversify our camera angles and shots throughout the film to portray it in the way we feel
necessary.

We used medium shots quite regularly throughout our film as we introduced the audience to
the setting very early on in the film. The use of medium shots has allowed us to enable the
audience to focus on dialogue, facial expressions and body language instead of anything
going on in the background. Close up shots were also a common theme in our film, as it
allows us to focus squarely on the subject of interest. We used these predominantly as they are
key to generating interest, action and suspense. Facial expressions are very important in how
our film entices the audience, as a close up shot can portray an ordinary action or object as
something interesting to watch. They also allow us as the producers of the film to give away
key concepts of the film, for example the close up shot of the diary in the orphanage mid-way
through our production.

We took establishing shots for the film in our first film shoot, getting into good positions to
get an aerial view of our setting. We used (them roller things) to create several (something)
shots to give the audience a clear idea of where the setting was and what it looks like.
Garage Band

To create my radio trailer I used the program ‘Garage
band’. I used garage band to explore different themes
and sounds and I eventually put together a trailer that
I deemed would fit the conventions of a typical horror
film radio trailer. I used my own voice as well as a
couple of people from my groups (to do the scream
and other effects). I did the main voice for the trailer
and tried to portray it in a dark, gloomy fashion ; and I
added a lot of sound effects in order to create tension
where I could.
Photoshop

I used photo shop to create the poster for my film
‘Orphanage’. I used films such as ‘Final Destination’
and ‘Scream’ to more or less inspire how I laid the
poster out and what went on it. I took a photo of
where we were filming (long, narrow hallway at an
abandoned hotel) and used it as the background to my
poster. I felt that this worked really well and fit the
conventions of a typical horror film poster as I
changed the photo to black and white, which added to
the eerie effect and causes the setting of our film to
seem much more daunting. (add more)
Final Cut Pro

Final cut pro was one the main pieces of technology that we used
upon creating our film as we did all of our editing on this
program. In some scenes we removed the colour and had the film
playing in black and white. We did this to create a cold and
sinister atmosphere that fits the conventions of a psychological
horror film. We added a great deal of cross fades into our editing,
in order to keep suspense going at times. I found that when it
came down to the editing garage band was also very helpful, as
we could use it to obtain a huge variety of sound effects and add
them onto our film at necessary times.
For example at the start of the film, when (whoever) is walking
through the snow to the orphanage we added footstep sound
effects from garageband to correlate her walking, and removed
the audio from the original clip.
