2. Horror Example
- The outsider is a young man, 25 or so.
- He doesn’t see any human bodies on the floor, until he starts driving a car he
found and goes over ‘bumps’ which turn out to be human skeletons laying
roadside
- The setting starts off with the man waking up in the countryside, and moving into
the nearest by city to look for civilisation.
- He learns that the two surviving rival gangs of the city are cannibals, looking for
any food they can.
- He winds up being chased by one of the gangs to the very end of a backstreet
- The outsider narrowly climbs over a fence, however he loses his arm in the
process to the cannibals, just as he’s making it over the fence
This film would be categorized as a horror because of how humans have destroyed the
earth and everybody around them. So due to the murders / cannibals etc it adds an
eeriness and caution to the atmosphere, as any character seeing the cannibals would
know that there is danger looming.
3. Rom- Com Example
- The outsider is an American girl that’s just started a new high school in her
senior year.
- As she’s walking into school on her first day a huge school brawl breaks
out with over 50 pupils getting involved
- Setting is a run down high school, in Richmond for example. Not much
funding / support etc.
- The conflict comes between the different social groups at school
- She gets bullied at her new high school for having more money than other
students, for example she has her own car and lives a lot better off than
most of the other students.
- She finds comfort in another boy at the high school in the same situation
as her and resolves her issues
This film would be categorized as a romantic comedy because the film would
follow the female protagonist throughout, and give the audience her view on
her life and everything that takes place. Including the love story between her
and the boy that she meets.
4. Action Example
- The outsider is a cowboy
- He hears pistol shots coming from the nearest town, he goes to investigate.
- The setting is in a remote southern town in Texas, a couple of hundred years ago
- The two rival gangs pretty much just constantly shoot up the town, in order to try
and kill one another
- Whilst the male protagonist is in the sheriffs office asking about what’s happened,
three gang members outside ruthlessly murder his horse, as he can only watch
from the window
- The sheriff tells him that there’s no law in the town, and if he wants to succeed
he’s going to have to protect and defend himself
- He goes outside and kills all 3 gang members
