Both of the plays Medea and Antigone have tragic themes and their main characters are women who
find themselves unhappy and so decide to act on behalf of these feelings. In both cases the result is a
climax at the end of the play in the form of several deaths. One of the main reasons they decide to
act is because they find it difficult to cope with competition of other women. Both Jean Anouilh in
his play Antigone and Euripides in his play Medea have based their tragic plots on the roles of
jealousy and spite and the extremes they can make a person go to. In my analysis I will first look at
the effects competition has on both Medea and Antigone, in particular jealousy. After this, I will
discus the aspirations both women have as a result of feeling jealous and how other characters in the
play see them. Finally I will look at how the two characters act on impulse of their jealousy and
compare what it leads to in each play.
When talking about the character's jealousy it is important to first determine who is the cause of
these feelings. In both cases, we could say it is other, in the characters opinion 'rival', women. In
Antigone's case, the jealousy is aimed mainly at her "radiant" and "beautiful" sister Ismene. Ismene
is not only the more beautiful of the two sisters, but she is also more favoured and admired by the
others.

During the Nazi occupation of France, Jean Anouilh produced an adaptation of Sophocles' tragedy,
Antigone, as a representation of the struggle between those collaborating with the occupants and
those resisting them. While it is possible to read Anouilh's Antigone as a 'texte de la Resistance', it
can also be interpreted as an apologia for the Nazis' severe, authoritarian behavior. The two key

Sophocles and Jean Anouilh use simplistic storytelling in order to discuss the events and societal
norms of the times when they were writing Antigone. When the tales are stripped down to their key
stories, they both are about a defiant girl who goes against her uncle in order to do what she believes
is morally right. In regard to the definition of tragedy, Sophocles follows the Greek standard of
tragedy. By making Creon the tragic hero who is plagued by his own ego and unchanging ways
when it comes to power. Anouilh puts a twist on the Greek tragedy by putting the focus on Antigone
and not having the typical tragic hero who is unattached from the audience. Instead, Antigone is a
heroine with everyday imperfections and emotions which seek to inspire people to condemn the
French's relationship with Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Sophocles makes Creon the
tragic hero. He can be seen as the traditional Greek tragic hero since he falls from a noble position
of power and loses those closest to him. He is egocentric and ends up being defeated by his rigid
sense of pride. He believes his authority is absolute and should therefore never be disobeyed. This is
shown when he says, "But when the city takes a leader, you must obey" (Sophocles 666). With this,

but some do not. Another difference since the 70's is the inflation of the dollar. A dollar in 1970 is

These opposites essentially represent not only the tendency of this world to possess conflicting
images, but also an individual's tendency to have conflicting emotions as well as the struggles
between individuals. Antigone and Wings of Desire are two exceptional works of art, that although
seem vastly diverse in terms of setting, form and style are however, in my opinion, linked through
their portrayal of the struggles experienced by individuals as well as the demonstration of
conflicting images and forces.
Antigone is a play that was first written by Sophocles in 442 BC and later adapted and rewritten by
Jean Anouilh. The story follows the epic tragic heroine Antigone and her downfall through her
opposition against the King Creon. Wings of Desire, directed by Wim Wenders is a 1987 Franco–
German film. It revolves around two angels, one of who is named Damiel who falls in love with a
human. He wishes to renounce his immortality for a chance to be with the woman he loves and to
experience human emotions and sensations.
Unlike most Greek tragedies, Antigone is not essentially about the opposing powers of good and
evil. Instead, the play demonstrates the conflict between one's duty towards their family and their
country and social expectations. "Antigone presents a conflict between family loyalty and loyalty to

They have much in common, such as the fact that they explain their impending deaths as decided by

Meursault's mother's funeral is the first chapter of the novel, and the introduction to Meursault's
character. On the bus journey to his mother's old people's home he says only 'yes' to a soldier that
asks him a question because he does not want to talk. This is an example of the short sentences he
uses as dialogue and as narrator throughout the book. When he gets to the home, he does not cry or
act sad, showing us that he is quite emotionless. He points out to the caretaker that he is just another
inmate, with a little extra authority due to his position. Meursault does not recognise the caretaker's
authority as anything special, which is why he does not see the caretaker's point,
Meursault feels the same way about the judiciary in part 2. Camus makes the caretaker look stupid
because he does not see the truth that he is just an inmate with extra work. He may be making a
statement here about the way we try to make ourselves better by creating titles and roles. Authority
is linked to fate in that they are abstract concepts and both can be considered opposites to freedom.

The fact that he took drugs and a knife to school tells us that he doesn't care about his education or
feel that it is worth his time. Although, Bender giving his sunglasses to Brian really warmed my

Levi's Strauss & Co
Two years after his father's passing, Levi Strauss immigrated from Buttenheim, Bavaria to New
York with his sisters in 1848. His two older brothers owned a dry goods business called "J. Strauss
Brother & Co" located in New York City. After becoming more familiar with the trade and how the
business worked, he traveled to California after word got out about the gold rush in 1853. Levi
wanted to keep up with the demand, so where there were people looking for their fortune through
gold, he was there making pants for them and the people who worked in tougher conditions.
Levi received a letter around 1872 from a loyal customer of his. Jacob Davis was a tailor from Reno,
Nevada loved his design of pants and continued to buy from Levi because of the pant's quality. He
had a proposition for Levi. In this letter it proposed on collaborating on a new design for pants were
using metal rivets on the sections that go through the most strain, would make the pants last much
longer. Jacob came to Levi because Levi was already established as a businessman and was familiar
with the trade. Also he needed someone that was familiar with the trade to put this idea into action.
Levi agreed to patent the idea. On May 20, 1873, the patent was given to Jacob Davis and the Levi
Strauss & Company and the " blue jean was born."

Due to the war ending in 1945, all families were able to settle down and have children. This led to
the baby boom of 1945–1960s where there was an abundance of youths in the 1950s. In the 50s
there were almost 100 babies born a minute putting a threat to over population (Howell.G, 1975).
From this, the teenager was invented (Kotarba J A, 2012) where many different subcultures had
formed, each with individual styles and influenced by figures in film, music and TV. Glossy fashion
magazines such as Vogue and Seventeen were also becoming very popular so youths were able to
easily see what the future held for trends and what clothes they should and shouldn't be wearing.
Teenage girls and boys were now recognised as a new consumer and when designers started to
realise this they set up boutiques inside department stores (Buxbaum.G, 1999). They sold simpler
designs at cheaper prices where the younger generation were able to create their own style rather
than copying their parents, for example ranges of clothes would come out specifically targeted at
young girls for dances where they would have a large choice in dresses to buy. British teenagers had
twice as much money to spend on what they liked compared to their parents (Breward.C, 1999).
This meant that a new market opened up for retailers with a great economic dependence on this

My Family Relationship
Once a close friendship is built with someone, eventually, a relationship with their mothers has to be
established; whether it is a close or just a comfortable relationship. We all have felt or acted a certain
way toward our friends' mothers. The friendships I have established with some of my friend's moms
are handled at different extremities, ranging from "nice weather we're having" to the coffee talks.
Each has a different personality that allows us to classify them into certain groups; some are cool
like the one you are unusually close to. There are also those mothers in which you try to limit
conversation like the one that thinks she is cool and the one that barely partakes in verbal
interactions, the strict mom. The mother you are unusually close to could have heart–to–hearts with
you even when your friend is not present for a long period of time. You could easily talk about
politics, your lifestyle, etc. If she were the same age as you, it is likely the two of you would be
close friends who hang out all the time. She welcomes you into the family and her home always.
The way she dresses is classy chic; she wears black heels from Louis Vuitton, skinny faux leather
pants, and a red flowy shirt. My friend's mom never failed to welcome me excitingly at the door,
