Supporting innovation in insurance with randomized experimentationDomino Data Lab
Recent technological advances, a dynamic competitive landscape, and an evolving regulatory environment have led to a period of rapid innovation for many insurance providers. Here, we’ll explore how data scientists may use randomized experiments to rigorously assess the causal impact of innovations on business outcomes. Particular emphasis will be placed on experimentation in “offline” channels, with some of the challenges and mitigation strategies highlighted.
Business analysts have several key skills that make them invaluable to their organizations and the projects they work on. One of those skills id problem analysis. These slides cover the 5 steps you need to take to be effective at problem analysis.
We work on projects to improve reliability. There may not be the field data immediately available. Let’s explore what you can do to improve the overall program while delivering on your project. Specifically, what’s with cost and procurement?
Detailed Information: As a reliability professional we often work with a team focused on improving the reliability of single product or system. We work with the resources and capabilities of the organization. For me a reliability project is one product or line, a program is the entire organization and lifecycle. We bring specific tools and knowledge, yet rely on the overall reliability culture of an organization to be successful
The overall reliability program may or may not have the field data, root cause analysis and other element of information that allow us to effectively solve problems for a specific project. In some cases we have to work to improve the overall program while striving to create a reliable product. Let’s explore what you should do when you are building a reliability model for a new project and would like to use previous reliability history.
If the data is not available what do you do? What are your options? Let’s discuss what happens when the procurement team consistently selects the least expensive and least reliable components. What are your options? You can and should change the way entire departments do business, for the good of the project and the organization. Let’s discuss the scope of your role as a reliability engineer.

Forecasting - Estimating the future value of training investments: Creating ...Daniel McLinden
Implementing a program and then waiting a year to find out if that program has made a difference may not be a practical response to scrutiny from the executive suite. A better way to respond is to include forecasting when planning investments intended to develop human capital. Forecasting impact and ROI illustrates what resources, processes, and supports are necessary to achieve impact. This session will show you how to adeptly take evaluation methods and move these earlier in the program’s life-cycle. We will demonstrate how to apply ROI evaluation methods to forecasting and complement these methods with additional methods. In particular, we will cover the use of logic modeling to map the causal chain of events from investment to impact and ROI. A case example will illustrate each of the steps of assessing the economics; namely, defining current and anticipated costs, estimating future benefits, calculating the future Return on Investment (ROI), and conducting a sensitivity analysis.
How do we know the effect of our policies, programs and investments? By measuring it. We’re not always very good at it, we haven’t been doing it for long enough, or in enough fields, or with enough collaborations, but we’re getting better and more excited and there’s a whole lot going on in this space right now. In this presentation, Emma Tomkinson, a social impact analyst from Sydney, Australia, will showcase examples of collaborative work in social impact measurement from around the globe.
Purpose: To advance public relations measurement by recommending metrics and approaches for evaluating public relations’ influence on four main business outcomes:

The Forbes Funds Soundings Breakfast Session on the Wage and Compensation of ...GPNP
The Forbes Funds launched its first volume of the Soundings Report – a flash report that provides timely information, measures the “pulse” of the nonprofit sector, and provides quick and efficient data points to tell the story of a particular issue. This first issue looks at the Wage and Compensation of the Nonprofit Sector. In this study, we sought to answer a few questions: 1) are nonprofits contributing to the issue of escalating poverty by providing low wages with limited benefits; 2) are nonprofit employees able to retire with the type of wages and benefits they are receiving; and 3) are nonprofits still able to provide competitive compensation packages given the escalating cost of health care. Of the human services and community development organizations surveyed in this report, we found that over 50% of their employees are paid at or below 300% of the poverty level. On the positive note, 76% of agencies provide retirement benefits and 88% provide health coverage of some sort. What does this mean for your workplace and for the nonprofit community?

RESULTS: Overall life span (LS) was 2252.1±1742.5 days and cumulative 5-year survival (5YS) reached 73.2%, 10 years – 64.8%, 20 years – 42.5%. 513 LCP lived more than 5 years (LS=3124.6±1525.6 days), 148 LCP – more than 10 years (LS=5054.4±1504.1 days).199 LCP died because of LC (LS=562.7±374.5 days). 5YS of LCP after bi/lobectomies was significantly superior in comparison with LCP after pneumonectomies (78.1% vs.63.7%, P=0.00001 by log-rank test). AT significantly improved 5YS (66.3% vs. 34.8%) (P=0.00000 by log-rank test) only for LCP with N1-2. Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: phase transition (PT) early-invasive LC in terms of synergetics, PT N0—N12, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells- CC and blood cells subpopulations), G1-3, histology, glucose, AT, blood cell circuit, prothrombin index, heparin tolerance, recalcification time (P=0.000-0.038). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and PT early-invasive LC (rank=1), PT N0—N12 (rank=2), thrombocytes/CC (3), erythrocytes/CC (4), eosinophils/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), segmented neutrophils/CC (8), stick neutrophils/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10); leucocytes/CC (11). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (area under ROC curve=1.0; error=0.0).
CONCLUSIONS: 5YS of LCP after radical procedures significantly depended on: 1) PT early-invasive cancer; 2) PT N0--N12; 3) cell ratio factors; 4) blood cell circuit; 5) biochemical factors; 6) hemostasis system; 7) AT; 8) LC characteristics; 9) LC cell dynamics; 10) surgery type: lobectomy/pneumonectomy; 11) anthropometric data. Optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for LC are: 1) screening and early detection of LC; 2) availability of experienced thoracic surgeons because of complexity of radical procedures; 3) aggressive en block surgery and adequate lymph node dissection for completeness; 4) precise prediction; 5) adjuvant chemoimmunoradiotherapy for LCP with unfavorable prognosis.

Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.

4. The Context [We are] trying to put much more emphasis on evidence-based policy decisions here at OMB. Wherever possible, we should design new initiatives to build rigorous data about what works and then act on evidence that emerges — expanding the approaches that work best, fine tuning the ones that get mixed results, and shutting down those that are failing. -- Peter Orszag, former Director of the Office of Management and Budget 4
5. Key Assumptions Agreement on what it means to be “effective” Reliable evidence on which programs are effective, using the proper measures Reliable evidence on the core elements that contribute to effectiveness Documentation and communication of these elements Understanding of how the elements can or should be adapted to local conditions Providers have sufficient resources and capacity to replicate evidence-based practices 5
6. Key Distinctions Outputs (typically, units of service) Gross or absolute outcomes(e.g., employment, learning, or behavioral gains for those who are served) Net impacts(how the outcomes differ from what would have occurred without the intervention) 6
7. 5/11/2011 70 80 40 20 Job Program Group Control Group Outcomes vs. Impacts: Which program is more effective? 100 100 90 90 80 80 70 70 60 60 Percent Placed In A Job Percent Placed In A Job 50 50 40 40 30 30 20 20 10 10 0 0 A B 7
9. Key Challenges in Replication Rigorous evidence of what works The right level of model specification Proper “fit” between the replicated program model and the local population being served Other factors that may affect results (staffing, funding levels, etc.) Finding useful “leading indicators” for program staff Data issues
10. Implications for Planning and Practice Need a realistic meeting of the minds on the roles of policymakers, funders, researchers , and providers The goal is fidelity to the right things, at scale and at reasonable cost Need appropriate support for replication and organizational infrastructure (dissemination of research findings , tools and training, data systems, etc.) Beware of potential distortions in interpreting outcomes – especially the influence of participant selection Recognize that moving from outputs to outcomes to impacts is an evolutionary process
