The Mayans built a great empire in the jungles of Central America over 1500 years ago. They constructed breathtaking pyramid temples out of stone, some over 120 feet tall. The Mayans were also highly advanced, creating one of the most accurate calendars of the ancient world and making observations of the solar system. They developed complex math and writing systems, and their religion involved sacrificing captives and rulers' blood to please the gods. Today, ruins of their architectural and cultural achievements can still be discovered deep in the jungle.
