5. Anglican Prayer Beads
• Anglican Prayer Beads
are a relatively new
form of prayer, blending
the Orthodox Jesus
Prayer Rope and the
Roman Catholic Rosary.
The thirty-three bead
design was created by
the Rev. Lynn Bauman in
the mid-1980s, through
the prayerful
exploration and
discovery of a
contemplative prayer
group.
14. But Short Prayers Are Great
• Mt 14:30 But when he saw the wind, he was
afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord,
save me!"
• Mt 15:25 The woman came and knelt before
him. "Lord, help me!" she said.
• Ps 116:4 Then I called on the name of the
Lord:
• "O Lord, save me!"
15. What is Prayer and What's It For?
• #1, Define prayer
• #2, Purpose of prayer
• Definition of prayer=
• Asking God for something
16. The “Lord's Prayer”
• “This certainly has all the potential in the world
to be a touchy subject. This prayer has been
adopted by countless churches as the prayer
given by the Lord for the Church…, but it is simply
soaked with Jewish meaning, and dripping with
desire for the kingdom before the Church was
ever in view!... And this prayer (which is really a
combination of two popular Jewish temple
prayers) is a prayer of preparation and
anticipation for the kingdom that is promised in
the Old Testament.” Brad Maston, Holly Hills Bible Church
17. Mt 6:9-13, The Lord’s Prayer
• KJV, Mt 6:9-13 After this manner therefore pray
ye:
• Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy
name.
• 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth,
as it is in heaven.
• 11 Give us this day our daily bread.
• 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our
debtors.
• 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the
power, and the glory, for ever. Amen
18. Mt 6:7, The Lord’s Prayer
• KJV, Mt 6:7 But when ye pray, use not vain
repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think
that they shall be heard for their much
speaking.
• So what do many Christians & churches do?
19. Mt 6:9, Pray Like This
• ESV Matthew 6:9 Pray then like this...
• NAS Matthew 6:9 "Pray, then, in this way…
• NET Matthew 6:9 So pray this way…
• It’s not “pray this.”
20. God’s Name
• Dad asked his little boy what he learned in
Sunday School. He said he learned god’s
name.
• “Oh, what is it?
• Howard!
• Yeah, Jesus said, “Howard Be Thy name”.
22. Isa.59:2
• Isa 59:2-3 But your
iniquities have
separated you from
your God; your sins
have hidden his face
from you, so that he
will not hear. 3 For
your hands are stained
with blood, your
fingers with guilt. Your
lips have spoken lies,
and your tongue
mutters wicked things.
23. What Access To God?
• By what right, means, or authority can wretched
sinners like us approach, or call upon the infinitely Holy
God?
• Let alone make requests of Him after we have sinned
against Him!
• John 14:13 "Whatever you ask in My name, that will I
do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14
"If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.
• John 15:16…whatever you ask of the Father in My
name He may give to you.
• John 16:23…ask the Father for anything in My name,
He will give…
24. What Access To God?
• So, after Judas left the Last Supper, Jesus
explained to the Eleven, in John 14:3 that He
would die then, “…go and prepare a place for
you, I will come again and receive you to
Myself, that where I am, there you may be
also (the rapture).
• Seven X’s after that, in the Gospel of John,
(14:13, 14, 26, 15:16, 16:23, 24, and 26), Jesus
commands the church to “ask in My name”
25. What Access To God?
• Every time it is "Whatever you ask in My name”
the “you” is singular. You individually, as a “child
of God”, cleansed by the blood, can ask anything
“in My name”
• But this same Jesus taught the Old Testament
Jews in Matthew 6:9 "Pray, then, in this way: 'Our
Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your
name…” The “Our Father” is plural.
• A different dispensation happens after, Matt 10:5
in Matt 11:11. No longer national Israel.
26. Mt 6:9, Hallowed Be Thy name
• ESV Matthew 6:9… hallowed [verb imperative
aorist passive] be your name.
• NAS Matthew 6:9…Hallowed be Thy name.
• Jesus instructed them to ask God to make His
name Hallowed (make holy, sanctify,
consecrate, dedicate, purify)
• What would the Jews remembered when they
heard this request?
27. Eze 36:20-29, Hallowed Be Thy name?
• Ezek 36:20-23 And wherever they went among the
nations they profaned my holy name, for it was said of
them, 'These are the Lord's people, and yet they had to
leave his land.' 21 I had concern for my holy name,
which the house of Israel profaned among the nations
where they had gone.
• 22 "Therefore say to the house of Israel, 'This is what
the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, O house
of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the
sake of my holy name, which you have profaned
among the nations where you have gone. 23 I will
show the holiness of my great name, which has been
profaned among the nations, the name you have
profaned among them……
28. Eze 36:20-29, Hallowed Be Thy name?
• Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares
the Sovereign Lord, when I show myself holy through
you before their eyes.
• 24 "'For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather
you from all the countries and bring you back into your
own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you
will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities
and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart
and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your
heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I
will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my
decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 28 You will live
in the land I gave your forefathers; you will be my
people, and I will be your God.
29. Hallowed Be Thy name
• “Hallowed [imperative] Be Thy name” is a strong
imperative, asking God to make His Name
holy, and to bring in the millennial kingdom!
• Matthew 6:10 'Your kingdom come [imperative].
Your will be done [imperative], On earth as it is in
heaven.
• Since they are told to pray for it to “come”, we
know that it is not here yet.
30. Mt 6:10, Thy kingdom come
• Mt 6:10 Thy kingdom come [verb imperative aorist
active]. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in
heaven. KJV
• The aorist active means at a point in time
• Not, “make your kingdom come into our
hearts” (over the next few millennia)
• Nowhere in Scripture do you “find the
Kingdom coming into some ones heart. It’s the
opposite, we come into the Kingdom”
31. Mt 6:10, Thy kingdom come?
• Ezek 36:23 …It is not for your sake, O house of
Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for
the sake of my holy name, which you have
profaned among the nations where you have
gone. 23 I will show the holiness of my great
name, which has been profaned among the
nations, the name you have profaned among
them. Then the nations will know that I am the
Lord, declares the Sovereign Lord, when I show
myself holy through you before their eyes.
• Jesus said to request the Kingdom, so…
32. Mt 6:10, Thy Will Be Done
• Mt 6:10 …Thy will be done in earth, as it is in
heaven. KJV

• Ps 89:2 I will declare that your love stands
firm forever, that you established your
faithfulness in heaven itself.
• Ps 103:19 The Lord has established his throne
in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.
33. Mt 6:10, Thy Will Be Done
• Mt 6:10
• your kingdom come,
• your will be done
• on earth as it is in heaven.
• These 2 imperatives are for God to establish
the Millennial Kingdom
• Bring heaven to earth! Now!
34. Mt 6:10, Thy Will Be Done
• How well is God’s will done in heaven?
• Perfectly, completely, joyfully, immediately.
• But, right now we have;
• Hebrews 2:14 …him who had the power of death, that
is, the devil,
• 2 Corinthians 4:4 …the god of this world has blinded
the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see
the light of the gospel …
• Ephesians 2:2 …according to the prince of the power of
the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of
disobedience.
• 2 Corinthians 11:14 No wonder, for even Satan
disguises himself as an angel of light.
35. What Should We Be Praying For?
• Rom 8:23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who
have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as
we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the
redemption of our bodies.
• Titus 2:12-13 It teaches us to say "No" to
ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-
controlled, upright and godly lives in this present
age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope — the
glorious appearing of our great God and Savior,
Jesus Christ,
36. What Else Should We Be Praying For
While We Wait?
• Mt 6:11 Give us today our daily bread.
• NIV KJV NAU CSB ESV NAS NET NKJ Luke 11:3…our daily
bread.
• Used nowhere else in Greek Literature.
37. Mat 6:11, Our Daily Bread
• Matthew 6:11 `Give us this day our daily
bread.‘
• Brad Maston says, “This statement shows that
the people who were anticipating the
kingdom were to be praying for their daily
provision. As Toussaint writes: “It could hardly
refer to the kingdom age, since there will be
no shortage of food at that time (Zechariah
8:12; Amos 9:13; Isaiah 65:21-22).” Toussaint, Behold
The King. Pg. 110
38. Matthew 6:12, Forgive
• Matthew 6:12 'And forgive us our debts, as we
also have forgiven our debtors.
• Matthew 18:23 "For this reason the kingdom of
heaven may be compared to a king who wished
to settle accounts with his slaves. 24 "When he
had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten
thousand talents was brought to him.
• Matthew 18:33 'Should you not also have had
mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I
had mercy on you?'
39. Mt 6:14, If You Forgive Men
• Mt 6:14-15 For if you forgive men when they
sin against you, your heavenly Father will also
forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men
their sins, your Father will not forgive your
sins.
• Jesus is speaking to the Jews.
• Under the law.
• How many of your sins are unforgiven?
• Unforgiveness will hinder or communion.
40. Eye For An Eye
• “This is proof that this is not speaking to the
Church for we know that Church Age believers
are urged to forgive not on the threat of not
being forgiven but rather are urged to forgive on
the basis that we have already been forgiven in
Christ Jesus (Ephesians 4:32).” Brad Maston, Holly Hills Bible Church
• Eph 4:32 Be kind and compassionate to one
another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God
forgave [aorist] you.
41. Mt 6:13, Lead Us Not Into Temptation
• Mt 6:13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
• For Jews, under the Law, because…
• James 1:13 Let no one say when he is
tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for
God cannot be tempted by evil, and He
Himself does not tempt anyone. 14 But each
one is tempted when he is carried away and
enticed by his own lust.

66. So, In Conclusion!
• What is Prayer?
• Asking God for
something.
• What's It For?
• To bring glory to God.
67. Thomas L. Constable Says;
• “…prayer is a relational exercise. We communicate with
another Person in prayer. I believe that God created the
family with its interrelationships at least partially to
help us understand our relationship with Himself….
• We can ask God for information and ask Him to give us
and others the things that we need and want. We can
tell Him whatever is on our minds. We can and should
confess our sins to Him. We should praise Him for His
matchless character and thank Him for His gracious
conduct. We can even complain to Him knowing that
He will understand and at the proper time heal our
hurts.
68. Thomas L. Constable On “Wishing”
• One practice that looks remarkably like prayer and that many
people confuse with prayer is wishing. I can remember saying, "I
wish I had a million dollars." Is that a prayer? Was the Apostle Paul
praying when he wrote, "Now may our God and Father Himself
and Jesus our Lord direct our way to you" (1 Thess. 3:11)? When
Job said, "Oh that I knew where I might find Him!" was that
prayer? No, those statements are not prayers. The difference
between praying and wishing is that in praying we address our
communication specifically to God whereas in wishing we simply
voice our desire. I do not mean that wishing is wrong and praying
is right. They both have their place, but they are distinct
practices…. The key to the difference between prayers and
wishes—and sometimes they are very pious wishes—is the person
addressed. Communication to God constitutes prayer, but
reflective statements made generally or wishes expressed to
another person, or even to no one in particular, are not prayers.
That is, the Bible never identifies them as prayers…. Page 29,

• We never pray for folks we gossip about, and
we never gossip about the folk for whom we

71. The “Lord's Prayer”
• “This certainly has all the potential in the world to be a
touchy subject. This prayer has been adopted by
countless churches as the prayer given by the Lord for
the Church. While there is still much profit for the
believer to study it, we will see that this is not a prayer
that the Lord Jesus gave for the Church, but it is simply
soaked with Jewish meaning, and dripping with desire
for the kingdom before the Church was ever in view!...
And this prayer (which is really a combination of two
popular Jewish temple prayers) is a prayer of
preparation and anticipation for the kingdom that is
promised in the Old Testament.” Brad Maston, Holly Hills Bible
Church
72. www.spiritualresearchfoundation.org
• In this article we provide an overview on how prayer works.
There are two types of prayers – for worldly benefit and for
spiritual growth. Accordingly the prayers are answered by a
different aspect of God. Spiritual research has shown that
even negative energies can answer prayers, to our
detriment! One’s spiritual level is the single most important
factor in ensuring that one’s prayers are answered. Praying
for world peace, while a noble thought, is most likely not to
be answered due to lack of spiritual level of the people
praying. Paradoxically the people who can really effect
change through a single prayer are Saints but They see the
futility of praying as they are totally in alignment with God’s
will and don’t see it separate from Theirs. Lastly the
posture of prayer also contributes in the prayer being
answered.
73. • Dear Compass,
• I truly appreciate the work you do to illuminate the truth of God. And I agree with your doctrinal view about 99% of the time. In fact, I have found
times when I initially disagreed and later (the Spirit) wooed (or won) me over to your interpretation of a passage. I do, however, have a point to
challenge you with regarding a statement you made recently. You said:
• ". . . don't think that God "has" to save someone just because you are praying for them. That would mean you could affect someone's salvation by
praying, or not praying. And that's not scriptural."
• On this, I must split hairs. I agree that God does not have to do anything because we ask something of Him - especially the salvation of others' souls.
However, I also believe that intercessory prayer does magnify the Spirit's power (as directed by God through Jesus [our High Priest at God's right
hand in heaven]) to act in accordance with His will. Also, look at how Abraham, Moses, Daniel, Nehemiah and others seemed to move the hand of
God to save and have mercy on the people.
• I believe that God is just, and maybe he plants all the seeds of discontent that spur us to pray and have some prayers answered - others (outside His
will - not) - so in effect, by NOT praying (demonstrating unbelief) the Holy Spirit's power is demagnified and ultimately - this does and will effect my
"affect on others' salvation" - through prayer.
• In God, all things are possible.
• ANSWER
Thankfully, a person's salvation is NEVER dependent on another human's prayer or lack thereof.
• For He says to Moses, “I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOM I HAVE MERCY, AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVE COMPASSION.” - Romans
9:15-16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy. That is why we pray "if it's Your will."
• Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. - Matthew 6:10 At the same time, God invites us to pray continually
(1 Thessalonians 5:17: "pray without ceasing;"), to pray specifically (Philippians 4:6), and to pray confidently (Hebrews 4:16: "Therefore let us draw
near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need").
• God also tells us that "The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much." - James 5:16b
• God's allowing us to pray to Him is quite a privilege. As far as we can tell, just HOW God filters our prayers into His sovereign plan is a mystery. But
we know of NO scripture implying that our prayers in any way limit, enhance, magnify, demagnify, or in any other way affect God's power or ability to
act as He chooses.
• As Believers, unlike Moses and others who didn't have the Holy Spirit permanently indwelling them, our prayers are actually controlled by God, not
the other way around.
• In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with
groanings too deep for words; - Romans 8:26 When we pray, we are simply asking God for something, in faith, acknowledging our dependence on
Him. Whether He grants our request, or changes our hearts, or however He chooses to work in that situation is His choice.
• Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth;
Yours is the dominion, O LORD, and You exalt Yourself as head over all. - 1 Chronicles 29:11
74. • The old Jewish man
The wisdom of the ages.
.
A female CNN journalist heard about a very old Jewish man who had been going to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem to pray, twice a day, every day, for a
long, long time.
To check it out, she went to the Wall, and there he was, walking slowly up to the holy site.
She watched him pray, and after about 45 minutes, when he turned to leave, using a cane and moving very slowly, she approached him for an
interview.
"Pardon me Sir, I'm Rebecca Smith from CNN. What's your name?"
"Morris Feinberg", he replied
"Sir, how long have you been coming to the Wailing Wall to pray?"
"For about 60 years."
"60 years! That's amazing! What do you pray for?"
"I pray for peace between the Christians, Jews and the Muslims, I pray for all the wars and all the hatred to stop, I pray for all our children to grow
up safely as responsible adults, and to love their fellow man."
"And how do you feel Sir, after doing this for 60 years?"
"It's like talking to a brick wall."

• Robert Leighton
• DLK would add;
• We misrepresent His Provision, and Sovereignty when we fail to give
Him praise after our prayers are answered.
76. • Pray Early, Pray Often
• Our 4-year-old daughter's surgery was scheduled for 11:30
a.m. We were becoming anxious as time passed and no one
came to get her. Finally at 12:30, the surgeon arrived at her
room. Knowing my husband is a minister, the doctor asked
us if many people were praying for this surgery.
• Edgy from the delay, I said, "They were praying for you an
hour ago."
• With a smile, he shot back, "Thanks. That surgery went very
well."

77. John 17:1-26 Matthew 6:5-13, Prayer
• The self-sufficient does not pray, the self satisfied will
not pray, the self-righteous cannot pray. No man is
greater than his prayer life.

78. • A lad who heard his father pray for missions, and
especially for the needs of missionaries, that they
might be supplied, and that their institutions
might be amply sustained, said to him, "Father, I
wish I had your money." "Why, my son, what
would you do with it?" asked the father. "I would
answer your prayers," was the reply.

79. • The motive is this, "Oh! that God could be
glorified, that Jesus might see the reward of his
sufferings! Oh! that sinners might be saved, so
that God might have new tongues to praise him,
new hearts to love him! Oh! that sin were put an
end to, that the holiness, righteousness, mercy,
and power of God might be magnified!" This is
the way to pray; when thy prayers seek God's
glory, it is God's glory to answer thy prayers.

80. • Every time we pray our horizon is altered, our
attitude to things is altered, not sometimes
but every time, and the amazing thing is that
we don't pray more.

81. Always Say A Prayer Before Eating
• Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner
at his Grandmother's house. Everyone was seated
around the table as the food was being served. When
Little Johnny received his plate, he started eating right
away. "Johnny! Please wait until we say our prayer."
said his mother. "I don't need to," the boy replied. "Of
course, you do "his mother insisted. "We always say a
prayer before eating at our house."
• "That's at our house." Johnny explained. "But this is
Grandma's house and she knows how to cook.
82. Rev 8:3, The Tribulation Prayers

given much incense to offer, with the prayers
of all the saints, on the golden altar before the
throne.

• Zech 8:12 "The seed will grow well, the vine will yield
its fruit, the ground will produce its crops, and the
heavens will drop their dew. I will give all these things

• Amos 9:13-14 "The days are coming," declares the
Lord, "when the reaper will be overtaken by the

New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from

Israel; they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in
them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine;
they will make gardens and eat their fruit.
84. No Shortage Of Kingdom Food
• Isa 65:21-25 They will build houses and dwell in them;
they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit. 22 No
longer will they build houses and others live in them,
or plant and others eat. For as the days of a tree, so
will be the days of my people; my chosen ones will
long enjoy the works of their hands. 23 They will not
toil in vain or bear children doomed to misfortune; for
they will be a people blessed by the Lord, they and
their descendants with them. 24 Before they call I will
answer; while they are still speaking I will hear. 25
The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion
will eat straw like the ox, but dust will be the serpent's
food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my
holy mountain,“ says the Lord.
