WORSHIP
WHAT does it mean to
worship
&
HOW do we do it?
First: HOW do we worship?
In SPIRIT and TRUTH
John 4:24
God is a Spirit: and they that
worship him must worship him
in spirit and in truth.
SPIRIT (New Life in Christ)
Born again by faith in the Lord Jesus
Christ and His finished work (John
3:6)
TRUTH (God’s Word)
The Word of GOD (John 17:17) and
understanding (1 Corinthians 14:15-
16)
HOW do we worship?
In SPIRIT …
John 4:24
God is a Spirit: and they that
worship him must worship him in
spirit and in truth.
spirit = new life, born again
Worship doesn’t matter
unless we have first been
born again.
The natural man (our corrupt condition) from head to toe
We were made with a desire
to worship, BUT our desire
has been corrupted by sin . . .
THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO BEGIN TO WORSHIP HOLY GOD:
PERSONAL FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST AND HIS FINISHED WORK (JOHN 19:30)
“That which is born of the flesh is
flesh…”
“…that which is born of the spirit is
spirit” (John 3:6)
SIN
“Ye must be born again” (John 3:7)
Holy
Forgiven
Redeemed
Justified
Righteous
Saved!
Can everyone
worship God?
We must be born again to
worship God
Philippians 3:3 For we are the
circumcision, which worship God in the
spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and
have no confidence in the flesh.
HOW do we worship?
In TRUTH …
John 4:24
God is a Spirit: and they that
worship him must worship him in
spirit and in truth.
truth = God’s word; understanding
Biblically speaking,
what does worship
look like?
What is the Bible’s definition of
worship?
• It is an act of submission
• It is an act of bowing, kneeling, or
prostrating oneself
• It is an act of extreme reverence
Worship is acknowledging
your NEED of GOD
Worship removes PRIDE
Worship recognizes the
LORD for who He is
What is worship, and How do we
worship God?
Worship is bowing down before
God in submission to His
authority.
It is done in spirit and in truth.
END REVIEW
Do I have to bow
down to worship?
Some people do it when other
people can see them . . .
1 Samuel 16:7 … the LORD
sees not as man sees; for man
lookes on the outward
appearance, but the LORD
looks on the heart.
But, God looks on our hearts:
God looks on our hearts
But…
Psalm 66:18
If I regard iniquity in my
heart, the Lord will not
hear me:
Can we worship holy God with hearts filled with
sin?
Isaiah 29:13
Wherefore the Lord said,
Forasmuch as this people draw
near me with their mouth, and
with their lips do honour me,
but have removed their heart
far from me, …
1 Peter 1:15-16 But as he
which hath called you is holy,
so be ye holy in all manner
of conversation; [16]
Because it is written, Be ye
holy; for I am holy.
*Conversation = Way of life; living
*Holy = Separate; consecrated; pure; without sin
Holy attitudes
Holy behaviors
Holy desires
Holy words
Holy imaginations
Holy pleasures
Holy thoughts
These demonstrate a worshipful heart
Question:
Can we physically be
bowed down before
GOD 24-hours a
day?
Christ, our Example of worship
John 6:38
For I came down from heaven, not
to do mine own will, but the will
of him that sent me.
The Lord’s will was bowed down to the Father’s
will continually.
The question should be, are our
hearts bowed down before God
throughout the day?
It is EASY to “feel good” about
God in church
Everybody can sing songs
(even lost people can do that)
But, the Bible shows us that
practical worship is bowing
down before God whether in
body, or mind, or heart with a
submissiveness to obey His
commands and follow Christ
Are our hearts bowed down to GOD?
Do we:
Bow down to OBEY His Word?
Bow down to YIELD to His Spirit’s leading?
Bow down to CONFORM to His will in our lives?
Bow down to SUBMIT to His authority in our lives?
Bow down to SURRENDER in heart, in prayer,
looking to and relying on GOD to meet our needs?
WHEN do we
worship GOD?
Based on what we
have already learned
about the subject of
worship . . .
Is worship for a
group or is it an
individual matter?
Is worship one day
a week?
Is worship for
church only?
Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of
the week, when the disciples came
together to break bread, Paul
preached unto them, ready to depart
on the morrow; and continued his
speech until midnight.
Worship is done corporately.
*Corporately : an organized group acting together (toward a common goal)
Psalm 139 …7 Whither shall I go
from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee
from thy presence?
Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the LORD
are in every place, beholding the evil
and the good.
Worship is done individually.
When do we worship God?
Anytime!
Ideally: All the time!
WHERE are we
supposed to worship
GOD?
Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of
the week, when the disciples came
together to break bread, Paul
preached unto them, ready to depart
on the morrow; and continued his
speech until midnight.
Worship is done in a local (regular)
assembly.
John 4:21 Jesus saith unto her,
Woman, believe me, the hour
cometh, when ye shall neither in
this mountain, nor yet at
Jerusalem, worship the Father.
Worship is done both wherever you are
and with the church.
Does worship =
service / ministry?
Deuteronomy 10:20 Thou shalt fear* the
LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to
him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his
name.
Worship is the foundation from which true
service flows.
*In Matthew 4:10, the Lord translates “fear” as “worship.”
*Fear : a solemn, sobering reverence; a profound respect
Josh 24:14 Now therefore
fear the LORD, and serve him
in sincerity and in truth...
1. Fear the Lord (worship)
2. Serve Him
3. Sincerity and truth follow
Sadly, however, some Christians go straight to service
BEFORE learning to worship the Lord
Is worship singing?
Singing is more associated with
proclaiming the glory of the Lord in word
or song.
Worship is so much more than singing.
By the way:
What will we be singing in heaven?
Revelation 15:3-4
And they sing the song of Moses the servant of
God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and
marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty;
just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. [4]
Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy
name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall
come and worship before thee; for thy
judgments are made manifest.
Worshipful songs
Is worship…
Music?
Singing?
Praying?
Ministry?
Other?
These all proceed from a heart of worship.
Service is an extension of
worship.
Praise is an extension of
worship.
But, we must FIRST have
a worshipful heart.
Where do we worship God?
Anywhere!
Ideally: Everywhere!
