Disciples' Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13
(also known as Lord's Prayer)
Devotional on what to pray for. Disciples didn't know what to pray for so the Lord demonstrates the model of what to pray for.
1. THE DISCIPLES’ PRAYER (MATTHEW 6:9-13)
“After this manner, therefore pray ye: “Our Father which is in Heaven, hallowed be your name. Your
Kingdom Come, your will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is
the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, forever. Amen.” (Matthew 6:9-13).
THE CONTEXT BEHIND THESE VERSES:
The Lord Jesus warned the Disciples not to be like the Pharisees in their hypocritical and religious ways. The Lord
condemns the Pharisees’ motive of practicing their self-righteousness in public only to get praise and honor from
men instead of God.
He revealed to them what the Kingdom of God looks like and those who will inherit and enter it.
He revealed to them what the Father’s character and attributes are like.
He revealed to them what the Father is pleased with and what He despises.
He revealed to them the Father rewards those who practice spiritual disciplines in secret (i.e., giving, praying, and
fasting).
2. He reveals to them how to pray to the Father. He also reveals to them that the Father is concerned with the motives
of the heart rather than words when praying. The Lord is not telling them to pray this word for word but rather it is a
guideline for them on how to pray and what to pray for. This also applies to us today.
1. “OurFather whichisin Heaven, hallowed be yourname” (verse 9)
The Lord is teaching us the importance of praying by giving praise and honor to the Father. We praise and
honor His name because of His holiness in the world by creating a holy people who will call on Hisname,
proclaim the gospel, and accomplish good works.
*Note: Hallowed: “holy, consecrated”
2. “YourKingdom Come, your will be done in earth, asitisin Heaven” (verse 10)
The Lord is teaching us the importance of praying to the Father for His will to be done in our lives. Asking that
His will be done is a demonstration of our complete trust that He knows what is best in all of life’s
circumstances. It is a humble submission to His ways and His plans. We ask for our will to be conformed to
His.
3. “Giveusthisday our daily bread” (verse 11)
The Lord is teaching us the importance of praying to the Father to provide for us daily our physical and
spiritual needs. We need to remind ourselves that we are to fully depend on God for all things and not depend
upon ourselves or others.
3. 4. “And forgive us our debts, aswe forgive ourdebtors” (verse 12)
The Lord is teaching us the importance of praying for peace and reconciliation with our relationship to Him
as well as relationships with other people. Debts/debtors: sins we commit (debt) and those who commit sins
against us (debtors). Sin in the bible is seen as debt. Until sin is forgiven, that debt remains. We need to be
forgiven of our sins as well as forgiving others their sins.
5. “And lead usnotintotemptation, butdeliver usfrom evil” (verse 13)
The Lord is teaching us the importance of praying for spiritual protection against sin, the sinful influences of
the world, and the spiritual attacks from the Devil (the evil one). We must remember that our adversary, the
Devil, is always looking for an opportunity to drive us away from God (For he wills to kill, steal, and destroy).
We know that he has been defeated by Christ and must continue to trust and live in our Lord’s victory by the
power of the Holy Spirit.
6. “Foryoursisthe Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory” (verse 13)
The Lord is teaching us the importance of praising and honoring the Father’s power, authority, and glory over
all creation. By praising and honoring Him, we are specifically declaring that the He is thecreator of all
things. We recognize that He is sovereign and rules over all things (whether in heaven, inhell, and on the
earth), and that nothing can happen without His knowledge.
