Study and analyze the given problem.
1. 6 + 2 – 15 ÷ 5 x 2 = _____
2. 9 ÷3 + 7 x 4 ÷ 2 = _______
3. 12 ÷ 6 + 5 x 3 = ________

MDAS rule
(Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction)
state that in a series of operations without grouping
symbols, recall the following MDAS rule. That is
performing multiplication or division (whichever
comes first), followed by addition or subtraction
(whichever comes first).
6 + 2 – 15 ÷ 5 x 2 =
= 6 + 2 – 3 x 2
= 6 + 2 – 6
= 8 – 6
= 2
First, multiply or divide
From left to right, division appears
first before multiplication.
So, “divide” first and then “multiply”
Next, add or subtract
From left to right, addition
appears first before subtraction.
So, “add” first and then “subtract”
9 ÷ 3 + 7 x 4 ÷ 2 =
= 3 + 7 x 4 ÷ 2
= 3 + 28 ÷ 2
= 3 + 14
= 17
First, multiply or divide
From left to right, division appears
first before multiplication.
So, “divide” first and then “multiply”
Next, add or subtract
From left to right, addition
appears.
So, “add”
12 ÷ 6 + 5 x 3 =
= 2 + 5 x 3
= 2 + 15
= 17
First, multiply or divide
From left to right, division appears
first before multiplication.
So, “divide” first and then “multiply”
Next, add or subtract
From left to right, addition
appears.
So, “add”
7 x 5 + 3 ÷ 3 x 9 – 2 =
= 35 + 3 ÷ 3 x 9 – 2
= 35 + 1 x 9 – 2
= 35 + 9 – 2
= 44 – 2
= 42
First, multiply or divide
From left to right, multiplication
appears first before division.
So, “multiply” first and then “divide”
Next, add or subtract
From left to right, addition
appears first before subtraction.
So, “add” first and then “subtract”
16 ÷ 4 – 3 + 5
= 4 – 3 + 5
= 1 + 5
= 6
First, multiply or divide
From left to right, division appears.
So, “divide” first.
Next, add or subtract
From left to right, subtraction
appears first before addition.
So, “subtract” first and then “add”
When grouping symbols are involved in a
mathematical expression, we follow the GEMDAS
rule wherein:
G – grouping symbols
E – exponents
M – multiply
D – divide
A – add
S - subtract

“What do you think will happen if we do not
follow the correct order of operation in
solving mathematical equations?
Solve the following:
(13 – 5) x 3 + 7 – 8 =
= 12 x 3 + 7 – 8
= 36 + 7 – 8
= 43 – 8
= 35
First, perform operations within
each grouping symbols.
Then perform multiplication or
division from left to right, or
whichever operations comes
first.
Finally, perform addition or
subtraction from left to right or
which operation comes first
122 ÷ 4 – 3 x 24
= 144 ÷ 4 – 3 x 16
= 36 – 3 x 16
= 36 – 48
= - 12
First, evaluate exponential
expression
Finally, perform addition or
subtraction from left to right or
which operation comes first
Next perform multiplication or
division from left to right, or
whichever operations comes
first.
6 x 8 – (42 + 2) + 72 ÷ 8
= 6 x 8 – (16 + 2) + 72 ÷ 8
= 6 x 8 – 18 + 72 ÷ 8
= 54 – 18 + 72 ÷ 8
= 54 – 18 + 9
= 36 + 9
= 45
First, evaluate exponential expressions
Next, perform operations within
grouping symbol
Then perform multiplication or
division from left to right, or
whichever operations comes first.
Finally, perform addition or
subtraction from left to right or
which operation comes first
7(5 + 3) ÷ 4(9 – 2)
= 7(8) ÷ 4 (7)
= 56 ÷ 28
= 2
First, perform operations within
each grouping symbols.
Then perform multiplication or
division from left to right, or
whichever operations comes
first.
5 - (4 + 2 x 23) ÷ 10
= 5 - (4 + 2 x 8) ÷ 10
= 5 - (4 + 16) ÷ 10
= 5 – 20 ÷ 10
= 5 – 2
= 3
First, evaluate exponential
expressions
Next, perform operations within
each grouping symbols.
Then perform multiplication or
division from left to right, or
whichever operations comes
first.
“How do we simplify
mathematical equations
involving grouping symbols and
exponent”?
•Simplify the operations in
grouping symbols. Start from the
innermost grouping symbol
•Evaluate exponential expressions
•Multiply and divide in the order
they appear from left to right
•Add and subtract in the order
from they appear from left to
right
GEMDAS rules means
Grouping symbols,
Exponents, Multiplication,
Division, Addition and
Subtraction
Why is it important to follow the
correct order in solving
mathematical equations?
How does this lesson help us in
our daily activities?
Write T if the statement is true and write F if
the statement is false. In the GEMDAS rule.
1. we add first before we
multiply
2. we solve for exponents before
we subtract
3. we add before we divide
4. we add and subtract before we
multiply
5. we work on the exponents
before we work inside parentheses
6. we add after we work on
exponents
7. we work inside parentheses after
we multiply
8. we subtract before working on
exponents
9. we divide before we subtract
10. we subtract before we multiply
Simplify the following expressions:
1. 8 (2 + 5) ÷ [24 – (5 x 4)]
2. 6 + 2 (5 – 8)2 ÷ 3
3. 9 – (11 + 8) (48 ÷ 6)
4. 2[3 (2 x 3) + 27 – 4 – 23]
5. 8 – 4 (2 + 52) ÷ 12
Activity: Give the correct answer.
Andy bought a guitar for P1,200.00.
Then she paid P250.00 for each of
the 4 sessions of guitar lessons. Give
