Irish and Lynard are both working on the value of the
expression: 2 + 4 x 3 – 6 ÷ 2. However, they have
different answers. Irish answered 11, while Lynard
answered 6. Of the two students, who answered
correctly?
Objectives
After going through this lesson, you are expected to:
• Interprets and explains the Grouping, Exponent,
Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction (GEMDAS) rule
M6NS - IIf -148
• Performs two or more different operations on whole numbers
with or without exponents and grouping symbols.
M6NS - IIf -149
The Order of Operations GEMDAS
Rule 1: Simplify the operations inside the grouping symbols first. Grouping symbols are always done from the innermost set outwards.
Grouping- Parenthesis, Brackets or Braces
Rule 2: Evaluate the exponential expressions.
Exponents- 32
Rule 3: Multiply and divide in the order they appear from left to right.
Multiplication- Whichever comes first the operation from left to right
Division-
Rule 4: Add and Subtract in order they appear from left to right.
Addition-
Subtraction- Whichever comes first the operation from left to right
8 + 2 x 10=?
8 + 2 x 10
8 + 2= 10
10 x 10 = 100
8 + 2 x 10
2 x 10 = 20
8 + 20 = 28
This answer is INCORRECT This is the CORRECT answer
8 + 2 x 10=?
STEP 1:
Observe GEMDAS in this expression neither Grouping or Exponent,
what comes next is Multiplication
STEP 2: 8 + 2 x 10, therefore 2 x 10 is 20
STEP 3: In GEMDAS the next is Addition or Subtraction whichever
comes first from left to right.
Therefore 8 + 2 x 10 is equal to 8 + 2 x 10
8 + 20 = 28 is the correct answer.
10 - 8÷ 4 + ( 7- 2 )=N
Step 1: Observing GEMDAS we have a parenthesis in this expression
10- 8÷ 4 + ( 7- 2 ) and 7- 2 is equal to 5
Let’s try to solve.
Step 2: 10 - 8÷ 4 + 5
Step 3: 10 - 8÷ 4 + 5 there is no exponent what comes next is Multiplication or Division
whichever comes first from left to right 8÷ 4 is 2
Step 4: 10 - 2 + 5 Next its either Addition or Subtraction whichever comes first from left to right.
So 10 – 2+ 5=
8 + 5 = 13, this is the correct answer.
32 + 2 (8- 2) – 3=N
Step 1: Step 1: Observing GEMDAS we have a Parenthesis in this expression 32 + 2 ( 8 - 2) – 3,
so 32 + 2 ( 6 ) - 3
Let’s try to solve.
Step 2: We have an Exponent in this expression. 32 + 2 ( 6 ) – 3=
9 + 2 ( 6 ) – 3=
Step 3: We have a Multiplication in this expression. 9 + 2 ( 6 ) – 3=
9 + 12 – 3=
Step 4: Operate Addition and Subtraction whichever comes first from left to right
9 + 12 – 3 =
21 – 3 = 18
2 + 4 x 3 – 6 ÷ 2
Who answered correctly?
My answer is 11.
I answered 6.
Irish Lynard
Why is it important to follow rules?
What do you think will happened if you don’t
follow rules?
What present situation in your life can we
relate the importance of following rules?

GROUP 1- Make-Sure To Like It!
Write a Like Sign if the statement is correct and
Supply the correct answer if the statement is incorrect.
1. ) 2 x 2 – 4 ÷ 2 + 4= 12 _________________
2. ) ( 4 ) 2 – 12 + 2 = 3 _________________

GROUP 2- Pop That balloon!
Pop the balloon that shows correct answer in its equation.
8 x 2 – 4÷ 2 + 6= 12 9 x 8 – 36 ÷ 4= 63 3+2 + 8÷4 (4-2) = 6 16 – 42 +36= 0 2 + (7 x 3) – 5 = 18
GROUP 3: Correct Me if I’m Wrong!
Analyze the given sentences. Put a Happy Face if you agree with the
sentence, and if you didn’t agree with the sentence, write on the blank the
correct word or phrase that will make it right.
__________1. In simplifying expressions, the first thing to do is to simplify the numbers within the
Groupings.
__________2. In Multiplication/ Division and Addition or Subtraction you will simplify whichever comes
first from right to left.
__________3. In solving Order of Operations, you need to follow the GEMDAS Rule.
__________4. In simplifying answers in Order of Operation the result will be the same whether you
follow the rule or not.
__________5. GEMDAS stands for Grouping, Expression, Multiplication/ Division, Addition/Subtraction
Generalization

  • 22. 8 + 2 x 10=? 8 + 2 x 10 8 + 2= 10 10 x 10 = 100 8 + 2 x 10 2 x 10 = 20 8 + 20 = 28 This answer is INCORRECT This is the CORRECT answer
  • 23. 8 + 2 x 10=? STEP 1: Observe GEMDAS in this expression neither Grouping or Exponent, what comes next is Multiplication STEP 2: 8 + 2 x 10, therefore 2 x 10 is 20 STEP 3: In GEMDAS the next is Addition or Subtraction whichever comes first from left to right. Therefore 8 + 2 x 10 is equal to 8 + 2 x 10 8 + 20 = 28 is the correct answer.
  • 24. 10 - 8÷ 4 + ( 7- 2 )=N Step 1: Observing GEMDAS we have a parenthesis in this expression 10- 8÷ 4 + ( 7- 2 ) and 7- 2 is equal to 5 Let’s try to solve. Step 2: 10 - 8÷ 4 + 5 Step 3: 10 - 8÷ 4 + 5 there is no exponent what comes next is Multiplication or Division whichever comes first from left to right 8÷ 4 is 2 Step 4: 10 - 2 + 5 Next its either Addition or Subtraction whichever comes first from left to right. So 10 – 2+ 5= 8 + 5 = 13, this is the correct answer.
  • 25. 32 + 2 (8- 2) – 3=N Step 1: Step 1: Observing GEMDAS we have a Parenthesis in this expression 32 + 2 ( 8 - 2) – 3, so 32 + 2 ( 6 ) - 3 Let’s try to solve. Step 2: We have an Exponent in this expression. 32 + 2 ( 6 ) – 3= 9 + 2 ( 6 ) – 3= Step 3: We have a Multiplication in this expression. 9 + 2 ( 6 ) – 3= 9 + 12 – 3= Step 4: Operate Addition and Subtraction whichever comes first from left to right 9 + 12 – 3 = 21 – 3 = 18
