A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chile on February 27, 2010, killing many people and causing widespread damage to buildings, roads, bridges and infrastructure from broken water and phone lines. The earthquake generated tall tsunamis that reached not only Chile and surrounding areas, but also Hawaii, Tahiti and New Zealand. Aftershocks continued, though less powerful than the initial massive earthquake.
