A massive earthquake struck Chile, causing widespread damage through tsunamis, collapsed bridges, and power, water, and communication outages. The earthquake and resulting tsunamis killed at least 214 people in Chile and caused damage as far away as Hawaii, Tahiti, and New Zealand. Aftershocks continued to threaten areas affected by the initial earthquake, killing 13 more people in Santiago and sparking a chemical plant fire.
